| SEMO 93 | FLAG | This artifact is a United States flag (part a). It is made out of cotton cloth, and is rectangular with a landscape orientation. It has a canton (or square field) in the upper-left-hand corner consisting of 48 white stars, in six rows of eight stars each, on a blue background. The rest of the flag consists of a field of 13 alternating red and white stripes. | |
Since the flag has 50 stars, it postdates 1959, after the admission of the states of Alaska and Hawaii (each star on the flag represents a state, and the flag was amended in 1959 to reflect the admission of the two new states).
The flag is intended for hanging, and has two metal holding loops stitched into it at the two left corners; these loops are about 2 cm long. This edge is stitched over to form a margin, and is colored white (this end is called the hoist end, because it is the end from which the flag is hung; the other end is called the fly end). There is a small, white, printed cloth tag sewn on this end near the center of the margin. It reads: “3 FT. X 5 FT. 100% COTTON ‘PIONEER’ / Valley Forge Flag Co. (in cursive) / SPRING CITY, PA.”
The flag came with its own wooden pole, which separates into two pieces for storage (parts B-C). Part B is the upper half of the pole; it is topped with a gold-colored, ball-shaped finial. A length of white woven cloth rope is attached to this part through small holes in the finial; the rope may be decorative, or it may be for securing the flag to the staff. The other end of part B ends in a copper-colored metal cover. Part C is the lower half of the pole.
| According to the accession provenience, this flag was used during the 1965 Selma to Montgomery March. | 1 | | | |
| SEMO 94 | BOOT | Pair of boots (parts A-B) consistent with those used by U. S. military during Vietnam War era. Black leather (now discolored to brown); rubber hiking-style (grooved) treads, black cloth laces, dark-green colored cloth sides, black metal studs and catches for laces along opening. Logo engraved in circular shape on bottom: "RO-SEARCH" (may also read "RO-SEARCI"). "9 1/2 RM (?) 9-89" stamped near top of boots. "B7051" (?) written in white dry medium inside left boot. | 1 |
| SEMO 95 | BLOUSE | A dashiki is a short-sleeved, loose-fitting shirt with sleeves that go down approximately to the elbow and a wide, loose neck. They were popular in the 1960's and 1970's. | |
| This particular dashiki has a printed pattern consisting of black paisley (oval figures slight upturn on one end of the oval) on a green background. The fabric is light, and the sleeves are long for a dashiki. The artifact was hand-made. | 1 | | |
| SEMO 96 | BLOUSE | A dashiki is a short-sleeved, loose-fitting shirt with sleeves that go down approximately to the elbow and a wide, loose neck. They were popular in the 1960's and 1970's. |
| This particular dashiki has a printed floral pattern consisting of brown, orange, and yellow flower images on a black background. It has a black tag on the back of the neck that reads “THE DASHIKI / M.” (The letter “M” refers to the size, medium.) The fabric is probably linen. | 1 | | | |
| SEMO 97 | BELT | This belt consists of a wide strip of leather with a pattern of two rows of round holes going its whole length. The buckle is square, with one row of a similar hole pattern and two hooks to stick into the holes to hold it on. The leather is colored black; it is finished on the outside, and unfinished on the inside. This belt was described in the accession information as "military style." | 1 |
| SEMO 98 | HAT | This is a straw hat; it is roughly cylindrical in shape, with no brim. The straw is light brown in color, with a dark brown band along the outer edge. There is a leather band around the inner edge (which is now frayed and coming apart) with a stamped logo reading “GENUINE MILAN WEAVE.” | 1 |
| SEMO 103 | SHOE | Women's shoes (sandals)--2 straps (1 front, 1 back), both with nonferrous metal buckles and wedge-shaped heels. Rubber soles. Entire surface of both shoes painted over with green paint after manufacture (sides partly unpainted, buckles painted shut, etc.) "Cuddlers" brand shoes (logo engraved on sole). | 1 |
| SEMO 104 | CAMERA | This camera consists of two pieces (parts A and B) which fit together to form a roughly cubical box. (Note that these parts no longer stay together automatically.) Both pieces are made of heavy dark brown Bakelite plastic. One of the sides of the box has a peephole of red tinted glass about 1.5 CM in diameter. The opposite side has the opening for the lens (through which the light shines on the film), which is an embedded and slightly raised circle of clear glass. Engraved letters around the lens read “BABY BROWNIE SPECIAL.” The top surface has the viewfinder, which consists of a tiny rectangle of glass and a small passageway shaped like a tapering rectangle that crosses the top of the camera. It is narrowest on the end through which the photographer looks. Also on the top, and next to the viewfinder, is a circular focusing knob made of white plastic. The whole camera is designed with curved corners and edges in an Art Deco style. | |
The following is engraved on the inside of the camera: “USE 127 FILM / U. S. PATENTS 2,027,000 / 2, 029,918 / DES. 113.220 (?) / PATENTS PENDING.” There is also an engraved Eastman Kodak company logo on the outside back surface.
The camera case (part C) is also cubical, and is made of reddish finished leather stitched together with string. It has a simple closure, consisting of a flap that folds into a crossing slot. The case has a nonremovable, adjustable shoulder strap. Many names are handwritten in ink on the inside surface of the case; one name, “Flora Elmore,” is written on the outside. The top of the case has a white adhesive sticker on it about 6 CM long; this sticker has “MRS. FLORA ANDRY COLLECTION” typed on it.
Three small parts of the camera–a tiny white cylinder of bone or plastic (part D), a tiny circle of the same material (part E), and a metal spring (part F), were all found loose inside the camera case.
According to the sources below, this brand of camera was made by Eastman Kodak starting in 1934, and during and after the war years.

| SEMO 105 | SWEATER | This turtleneck (or long-necked) sweater is made of white orlon acrylic thread, and has a cable-stitch pattern, with straight stitches on the cuffs, neck, and bottom fringe. The sewn-on tage at the back of the neck reads: "New Yorker Sweater Company / New Yorker Sportswear / 100% Orlon Acrylic." It does not give the size (it seems large). | 1 |
| SEMO 106 | SHIRT | Short-sleeved shirt, made of light fabric consistent with style usually worn by men. Brand name "Van Heusen" (on printed tag near collar); size 15 to 15 1/2 also given on collar. Opening in middle with buttons. Colored red with small circular black paisley (oval figures with slight upturn on one end of the oval) prints around surface. | 1 |
| SEMO 107 | HAT | This is a white hat made of orlon acrylic. It is roughly dome-shpaed, with a hair-like, shaggy surface. The hat consists of one rectangular piece of fabric and a smaller square piece, stitched together; the stitching is visible on the inside. | 1 |

Originally long-sleeved, but sleeves have been cut off. One pocket on left side, square. Embroidered tag on back of neck, reads: "J. M. Citron (cursive) WASHINGTON BOULEVARD / Ivy Hall / Authentic."
| Probably part of a set with pants (SEMO 109). | 1 | | |
| SEMO 109 | PANTS | Solid green (olive drab) pants, light twill fabric, long, with cargo pockets (large pockets with sewn-on, button-down covers) in front. Zipper fly. Snaps shut with two buttons; button entry goes right to left. |
| Probably part of a set with shirt (SEMO 108). | 1 | | | |
| SEMO 116 | BELT | This belt consists of a wide strip of leather with three rows of round holes (a total of 15 holes). The buckle is made of gold-colored metal (probably brass), and it has two hooks and a single stud that fit into the holes to close the belt. There is a stitched lengthwise decorative pattern that goes around the belt in three rows. Underneath the stud is an engraved logo reading: "SAFARILAND PAT(ent) PEND(ing) / MLL (?) 87 / 48 / 1203996." The leather is colored black and is finished on the outside, and is greenish-brown and unfinished on the inside. | 1 |
| SEMO 117 | CAMERA, MOTION-PICTURE | The main body of this camera is a rectangular box covered with a rough-surfaced black material (probably vinyl or another plastic). The box is edged with metal. The box has a semicircular projection coming from the top (one of the shorter sides). The top also has a leather carrying strap that swings out on a hinge, along with a cylindrical projecting eyepiece with a gray rubber ring around it. The opposite longer side has three cylindrical metal projections; these are lenses, and all three have dials with numbers printed on them for focusing and adjusting the image. The lenses are arranged in a triangular formation in the upper half of the side; between them is a singular projecting metal rod. | |
The bottom surface has a small rectangular projection that acts as a base; it includes three holes that all have screw threads, and are intended for attaching a tripod. The rest of the bottom surface curves upward.
One of the two wide sides has a number of screws that hold the camera together, along with other dials and switches. It also includes a small engraved metal plate with a logo on it, reading: “BOLEX H16 REFLEX SWITZERLAND.”
The other wide side is much plainer, with two metal holders and (near the top) a round engraved logo with a black background. The logo reads: “Bolex Paillard” (see the last paragraph for more information).
Note that this camera produces motion pictures; the curved projections at the top and bottom are probably intended for the reels that are used to store motion picture film.
The following is a short history of this camera, from the second source below:
“In 1933, Pignons SA first made contact with the technical designer Jacques Bogopolsky, who also called himself Bolsky or Boolsky or Bolsey at times. Born in the Ukraine under the name of Bogopolsky, he studied medicine in Geneva and in 1924 opened a company there, Bol SA, to market his 35mm movie camera Cinématographe Bol and later his 16mm Bolex. To this day Bolex is a world-famous name in 8mm and 16mm motion picture cameras. ... In 1927 he introduced a movie camera called the Bolec. It later became the Bolex, and the rights to the design was sold to Paillard in 1931.”

| SEMO 119 | METER, LIGHT | The purpose of this light meter (part A) is to measure the ambient light available to ensure the quality of a photograph. The meter is a rectangular piece of gray plastic, with the long sides rounded slightly on one end. On this same end is a window, taking up about one-third of one of the flat surfaces, which includes a meter with a hand showing the amount of light. The other two-thirds of this surface is taken up with a round compound dial covered with clear glass, which is used to make adjustments. The center of this dial includes a printed logo for the manufacturer, Gossen Lunasix (the word “Lunasix” is printed in white cursive letters). There are two buttons, one grayish white and one black, on one of the long sides. On the opposite short side, there is a strap made of black string. |
The meter case (parts B-D) is made of reddish stitched and finished leather. Part B is the main part of the case; it is rectangular, and was made to fit around the meter. Parts C and D are u-shaped leather strips which once constituted the sides of the case; they are now loose. Part C includes a flap that encloses the case’s snap closure. The inner surface of the case is covered with red cloth.
Meter reading and setting guidelines (“OPEN LP 2/3 STOP” and so on) are handwritten in ink on the side of part B.
| This artifact also includes a round container for a battery (part E) and the battery itself (part F). Part E is a round container with a groove for a screwdriver (allowing it to be removed) and screw threads on its inside, which screw it into a depression for it on the back of part A. Part F is a small, round, gray-colored metal disk. | 1 | | | |

The case is made from hard, shiny, black-colored stitched leather; the leather is brown and unfinished on the inside. It is rectangular in shape, with one of the smaller ends made into a lid that folds over and closes with two inset brass studs. There is an unremovable brown electrical cord inside the case, with an electrical contact in the lid (this is 51 CM long) and a hole in the lid with a metal washer that lets the cord stretch out of the case. The presence of this cord implies that this is a piece of equipment that was used by a photographer or an electrician. The strap has metal buckles for adjusting the tightness. | 1 |

About one-half of the rod, at the center, is covered with a green plastic or rubber grip. One end has two short (about 1 CM long) nonferrous metal prongs, which are intended to give an electrical charge. The other end has a looped leather hand strap. There is a rectangular red metal logo near the point end that has been soldered or welded to the surface; it reads: “HOT-SHOT ELECTRIC STOCK PROD / MODEL B14 / (gives details on how to replace batteries) / HOT-SHOT PRODUCTS CO. INC., MINNEAPOLIS 16, MINNESOTA / MADE IN USA.” |
| The object is joined with modern bolts and welding or soldering. | 1 | | |

This tape is wound around the edge of a circular, disc-shaped holder (called a reel), which has a raised rim around the edge to hold the tape on and a hole at its center for placing it on a tape player. The tape player has a spindle that turns this reel, moving the tape off of it and onto another wheel. During this process, the tape travels along a metal reader called a "head" that plays back the sound recording. Note that the word "tape" refers both to the tape strip itself, as well as the reel and the tape together.
| This particular tape has no box, nor does it have any indication of what sounds are recorded on the tape. There are three radial arms that hold the tape in place on the reel. These arms are engraved with "Scotch," the name of the manufacturing company. | 1 | | | |

| SEMO 244 | PEW | This is a pew, a name for a long wooden or metal bench used in a church or other place of assembly. It is made of pine wood and painted white, except for the arms and the rail at the top edge, which are painted dark brown, and the underside, which is unpainted. It has a long, flat seat and a similar back rest, each consisting of one wood beam (with a capacity for two or three people). The back rest is wider than the seat. The seat and back rest are held up by two vertical side supports or posts, which are also wood beams. Each of these side supports has a foot, which consists of a trapezoidal wooden plank nailed to the floor end of each support on the inside and helping it to rest steadily on the floor. The side supports each have a decorative inset panel on their outer sides; these panels are shaped like Gothic lancet windows. Another triangular piece of wood is screwed between each side support and each beam for additional strength. | |
The top of each support is carved into an s-shape, and this s-shape forms the arms on each side of the pew. The arms flare out slightly to the sides, and each ends in a decorative scroll-like pattern at the front.
The seat and the back rest meet at a right angle, but both lean backward at a slightly acute angle compared to the ground and the two vertical supports.
| The pew is typical of those found in many churches in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. The paint appears to have been applied recently, however. The wood is joined with screws that appear modern (these may have been added later); there are three screws on each side of the two floor supports. | 1 | | | |
