SECTION 16451
LIGHTNING PROTECTION
PART 1: GENERAL
1.1 SUMMARY
A. The work required by this specification consists of furnishing and installing all materials and labor required for completion of functional lightning protection system. The lightning protection, bonding and grounding shall meet the latest standards of Underwriter=s Laboratories
UL 96, UL 96A, and Lightning Protection Institute (LPI-175), and shall be provided in accordance with this specification and attached drawing E2.
1.2 SUBMITTALS
A. Manufacturer=s Catalog Data: Furnish 3 copies of each for aluminum air terminals, aluminum roof conductors, copper down conductors, aluminum compression connectors, AL-CU connectors, copper connectors, clamps, fasteners, and ground rods.
B. Field Test Report: Clamp-on Ground Resistance Test Data.
PART 2: PRODUCTS
2.1 AIR TERMINALS AND TERMINAL BASES
A. Air terminals and bases shall be bare copper, Class I. Air terminals shall be 24" in length, 2" dia, manufactured by Harger Lightning
Protection, Inc., Catalog No. 1224CUAT, or approved equal.
2.2 ROOF CONDUCTORS INCLUDING ROOF BONDING JUMPER CONDUCTORS
A. All shall be copper unless otherwise specified. Copper cable consisting of 32 strands of No. 16 AWG copper wire, Class 1, manufactured by
Harger Lightning Protection, Inc., Catalog No. 32R, or approved equal. Aluminum jumper cables shall be a rope ray aluminum cable consisting of 24 strands of No. 14 AWG aluminum wire, Class 1, manufactured by Harger Lightning Protection, Inc., Catalog No. A24R, or approved equal.
2.3 DOWN-CONDUCTORS
A. Copper cable consisting of 32 strands of No. 16 AWG copper wire, Class 1, manufactured by Harger Lightning Protection, Inc., Catalog No.
32R, or approved equal.

2.5 GROUND RODS
A. The rods shall be 3/4 inch in diameter and 8-foot in length. The rods shall be rolled to a commercially round shape from a welded copper encase steel manufactured by the molten welded process or by the electro-formed process (molecularly bonded). The rods shall have an ultimate tensile strength of 34 kg (75,000 pounds) per 645/16 square mm (square inch) and an elastic limit of 22.6 kg (49,500 pounds) per
645.16 sq mm (square inch). The rods shall have a hard, clean, smooth, continuous, copper surface and the proportion of copper shall be uniform throughout the length of the rod. The copper shall have a minimum wall thickness of 0.33 mm (0.013 inch) at any point of the rod.
PART 3: EXECUTION
3.1 INSTALLATION
A. Lightning protection installation shall be in accordance with ANSI C2, NFPA 70, UL 96 & 96A and LPI-175. The installation shall be accomplished by an experienced installation company that is listed with Underwriters Laboratories for lightning protection installation. All conductors shall be copper, unless otherwise specified in the specification. Use aluminum jumpers to make bonding connections to aluminum assemblies or structure to be protected. Where aluminum jumpers are used, use bimetal connectors to connect between aluminum jumper conductors and copper conductors. Aluminum bonding jumper runs shall be as short as practical.
B. GROUND RODS: Drive rods until tops are 6 inches below the grade. Use exothermic welds only for the ground rod connections. Make these connections without damaging copper coating or exposed steel.
3.2 CONNECTORS, CLAMPS, FASTENERS, LUGS, PLATES AND STRAPS
A. Provide aluminum type where aluminum conductors are used. Provide brass type where copper conductors are used. Provide bimetal connectors where aluminum-to-copper conductor connections are required. Provide compression type connectors and clamps, suitable for in use for conductors being provided. Provide the vendor recommended fastening devices to secure wires in places.
3.3 FIELD TESTS
A. One month after the completion of the lightning protection system installation, perform clamp-on ground resistance test in the presence of a Government representative and provide the ground resistance reading for each grounding.
