Object Markers - There is currently no object marker on the left side of Abutment 2. All other object markers are in place. The object marker on the right side of Abutment 1 has been vandalized by gunfire, but remains legible.
Signing - There is a “One Lane Bridge” sign in place at each end of the bridge. These signs are not required at this site.
Drains and Drainage, Cleanliness - The deck has approximately 1” of sand and gravel over most of the surface.
Bridgerail post spacing is excessive. Dirt and debris that have accumulated in the gutterlines prevent proper deck drainage. (Photo 2) Bearing Devices - The steel bearing plates are corroding (Photo 3), but continue to serve their intended purpose.
Caps - Caps consist of 2 separate members that are spliced over Pile 3. The cap at Abutment 1 is decayed in 10’ to 12’ of its length on the right side of centerline. (See Sketch) The decayed area bears on Piles 4 and 5. There was no sign of crushing, but the cap will continue to deteriorate. Consider reducing the weight limit of this structure until this cap is replaced.
Posts / Piles / Tie Backs - New piles were driven adjacent to the original piles at Abutment 1, Piles 2 and 4 and Abutment 2, Piles 1 and 4. Abutment 1, Piles 1 and 3 and Abutment 2, Pile 3 each have a small decayed area. (See Sketches) Backing Planks - The ends of 2 of the backwall planks are broken at the left end of Abutment 2. (Photo 4) These were probably struck by maintenance equipment.
ITEM REFERENCE AND REMARKS ~ NARRATIVE REPORT
Crib Walls / Tie Backs - One of the bulkhead planks is severely decayed on the right side of centerline at Abutment 2.
(Photo 5) Wingwalls - The wingwall piles are severely decayed on both sides of Abutment 2. (Photo 6) The topmost wingwall planks are loose or have fallen on the left side of Abutment 1 and on both sides of Abutment 2. (Photos 5 and 6) One of the wingwall planks is severely decayed on the right side of Abutment 2. (Photo 6)
Waterway Obstructions / Drift - Debris accumulating on the bearing plates is contributing to their corrosion. (Photo 3) Fallen trees have partially blocked the channel downstream of the bridge. Drift is accumulating in this area as a result. The drift is not affecting the bridge at this time.
Bridge Railing - Bridge rail post spacing is excessive. Bridge rail splices are not supported by posts. The bridge rail post and the terminal on the left side at the far end of the bridge have been struck. (Photo 7) Both are bent as a result. The bridge rail terminals are lapped incorrectly on the left side at the near end of the bridge and the right side at the far end.
Remarks
Deck Slab / Panels / Joists - The exposed portion of the deck surface is becoming worn. Aggregate in the concrete is exposed. (Photo 1)
