Project Name: PFAS Decision Tree
Project Location: Statewide, AZ
Estimated Project Cost: $42K
Project Begin and End Date: 12/2023 – 08/2024
Brief Description of the Project: Kimley-Horn is collaborating with the Client’s Drinking Water Program to develop comprehensive, user-friendly decision trees for selecting optimal PFAS removal technologies in Public Water Systems (PWS). This project, aiming to create a resource similar to the EPA’s Arsenic Treatment Technology Evaluation Handbook but tailored for PFAS removal, consists of two main objectives.
First, Kimley-Horn will conduct a concise yet thorough literature review to compile critical information on how various water quality parameters affect the efficiency, efficacy, and applicability of three primary PFAS removal technologies:
Granulated Activated Carbon (GAC), Ion Exchange (IX), and Reverse Osmosis (RO) / Nano Filtration (NF). The review will consider factors including PFAS speciation, various cations and anions, and other water quality parameters. Second, based on the literature review, Kimley-Horn will create user-friendly decision trees that guide users through the process of selecting the most suitable PFAS removal technology, taking into account water quality parameters, source water variations, infrastructure constraints, and other relevant characteristics.
The resulting decision trees will serve as valuable reference materials for design engineers, Client staff, and PWS owners/ operators, and will be made publicly accessible on the Client’s website. This project showcases Kimley-Horn’s expertise in water treatment technologies, environmental engineering, and the creation of practical tools for complex decision-making processes, helping to streamline and standardize the approach to PFAS removal across various public water systems, potentially improving public health outcomes and operational efficiencies.
