Project Grant RF1AG096165
- This federal Project Grant award of $815,215 from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) is supporting a multi-modal imaging study to understand sex-based differences in brain circuitry and Alzheimer's disease (AD) pathology. The research, led by Yale University, has two key aims: 1) leveraging a new prospective cohort to test the impact of sex and sex-based factors like reproductive period and APOE genotype on functional brain networks and tau progression in...
- This $4,765,698 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 Aging Research) will fund a research study by the University of California, Santa Barbara to investigate the effects of endocrine aging on spatial navigation ability and its neuronal systems. The project will enroll 240 cognitively normal midlife adults, with a balanced distribution of pre-, peri-, and post-menopausal women, and use immersive virtual environments and brain imaging to elucidate how...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) provides $1,275,512 to The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to conduct research on understanding how changes in progranulin (PGRN) protein species impact the accumulation of the TDP-43 protein, which is associated with neurodegenerative disorders like Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. The research aims to elucidate the role of lysosomes and lysosomal...
- This Project Grant award of $119,367, funded by the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program, supports research to characterize the role of the protein tau and its interactions with RNA processing in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The principal investigator at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) aims to (1) investigate how tau, an RNA-binding protein,...
- This Project Grant award, valued at $2,129,396.00, was provided by the National Institute on Aging (NIA) under the Aging Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.866). The award aims to develop and validate engineered adeno-associated viruses (AAVs) that can selectively knock down the follicle-stimulating hormone receptor (FSHR) in neurons within brain regions vulnerable to Alzheimer's disease. This research seeks to understand the role of FSH signaling in cognitive decline and Alzheimer's...
- The National Institutes of Health National Institute on Aging awarded $3,024,000 under the Aging Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.866) to the Massachusetts General Hospital on September 30, 2022 for a project concluding on August 31, 2025. The award will support research into discovering sex-linked genes on the inactive X chromosome that may influence female vulnerability to Alzheimer's disease pathology. The awardee will employ genomic, transcriptomic, and epigenetic analysis to...
- This federal Project Grant award of $372,690, provided by the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 Aging Research), aims to comprehensively understand the heterogeneous causal pathophysiology of Alzheimer's disease (AD). The key objectives are to: (1) develop new statistical methods for uncovering heterogeneous causal relationships among amyloid-beta, tau accumulation, and cognition across diverse AD datasets; (2) apply these methods to reveal optimal treatment windows and target populations...
- The National Institute on Aging (NIA) awarded a $3,281,385 Project Grant under the Aging Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.866) to the University of California, San Diego (UCSD) to leverage 30 years of Alzheimer's disease clinical trials data. The goal is to examine the role of specific patient phenotypes, such as sex/gender, APOE4 status, and polygenic hazard scores, on response to drug or lifestyle interventions. The project will analyze data from 14,602 participants across multiple...
- This Project Grant award, totaling $913,012 and effective from August 22, 2025 to July 31, 2030, was provided by the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases (NIAID) under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.855). The grant supports research at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to assess the mechanistic basis for the increased prevalence of "Long COVID" or post-acute sequelae of COVID-19 in women compared to men. The...
- This $816,661 Project Grant award, issued on June 1, 2025 by the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 Aging Research program), supports comprehensive research aimed at elucidating the molecular mechanisms underlying tauopathies such as Alzheimer's disease and frontotemporal dementia. The project, titled "Aberrant Proteomes in Tauopathy: Revealing Functional Consequences via Multimodal Proteomics", combines expertise in mass spectrometry-based proteomics and functional genomics to...
This federal Project Grant award of $3,427,292 from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) will fund a comprehensive scientific investigation into sex differences in frontotemporal dementia (FTD). The research, conducted by The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), aims to deeply characterize understudied female-specific biology to unlock new insights into FTD pathophysiology, precision treatments, and novel dementia risk and resilience targets. The key research activities include: 1) prospectively assaying longitudinal sex hormone levels in plasma, 2) identifying sex-specific proteomic signatures of FTD from cerebrospinal fluid and plasma, 3) collecting a new female reproductive health history measure, and 4) developing disease progression models that incorporate sex-specific factors to precisely prognosticate FTD trajectories in males and females. This project will leverage two deeply phenotyped, longitudinally-followed local and international cohorts of genetic and sporadic forms of FTD and healthy controls (N=1095). The award period runs from September 15, 2025 to August 31, 2029.
