The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded Amissa Inc. $504,222 on August 17, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to develop digital biomarkers for detecting and monitoring vasomotor symptoms in perimenopausal Latina women using Apple Watch data. The Phase I Small Business Innovation Research project, HERMOSA, will create clinical-grade digital biomarkers to assess hot flashes and night sweats in a population that experiences these symptoms more frequently and severely than other women yet remains underrepresented in menopause research and less likely to access evidence-based treatment. Amissa has developed a perimenopausal health monitoring application with access to raw Apple Watch sensor data through Apple's SensorKit, enabling continuous passive collection of skin temperature, heart rate variability, oxygen saturation, sleep patterns, physical activity, and movement alongside self-reported symptom tracking via mobile app. The project comprises two aims: Aim 1 will recruit 120 perimenopausal women, focusing on Latina participants, to wear Apple Watches and log symptoms while the platform collects high-frequency physiological data. Aim 2 will develop machine-learning algorithms to detect vasomotor symptoms from the collected biomarker data. This approach provides real-world data in remote or underserved settings without reliance on traditional symptom diaries or in-clinic assessments. Performance occurs in North Carolina with a period ending July 30, 2027.
