The National Institute for Minority Health and Health Disparities awarded the University of Florida $422,125 on September 1, 2026, under the Minority Health and Health Disparities Research program (CFDA 93.307) to conduct a feasibility pilot study of a wearable maternal stress tracker (MAST) during the postpartum period. The study investigates whether a Garmin Viviosmart 4 wristwatch can accurately monitor postpartum sleep and daily stress through composite measurements of heart rate and heart rate variability, with validation against hair cortisol as a chronic stress biomarker. The device transmits data via Bluetooth to a mobile application (MEMA App) that triggers surveys measuring stress and depressive symptoms and generates real-time alerts to users and study staff based on stress levels to enable immediate personalized intervention. The research also assesses concordance between wrist-sensed stress measurements and blood pressure monitoring, and evaluates social needs using the PhenX toolkit across housing instability, money to pay bills, utility shutoffs, food insecurity, transportation, childcare, job insecurity, and safety. A third aim examines user acceptability, usefulness, and satisfaction with the device and alert processes. The project runs through July 31, 2028, with performance in Florida.
