Project Grant R35GM165456
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Dartmouth-Hitchcock Clinic $426,250 on July 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate translaminar interneurons in the spinal cord dorsal horn and their role in the transition from acute to chronic pain. The research combines voltage imaging, electrophysiological, and histological strategies to study excitatory translaminar interneurons in...
- The National Institutes of Health Office of the Director awarded Trustees of Dartmouth College $300,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to develop and pilot test THERABOT+, an enhanced artificial intelligence chatbot for mental health support integrating real-time biofeedback and passive sensing data. THERABOT+ extends prior research on THERABOT, a generative AI chatbot that demonstrated significant symptom reduction in depression and anxiety...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS) awarded Mayo Clinic Jacksonville $2,277,111 on September 15, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop the PAIN (Pain AI Intervention) platform, a wearable sensor-based artificial intelligence system for at-home continuous pain monitoring and personalized opioid management. The project addresses limitations in patient-reported pain scales by deploying validated deep learning algorithms...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Dartmouth College received a $2.25 million Project Grant from the National Institute of General Medical Sciences (NIGMS) under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2029. The award supports the development of novel computational methods to decode disease mechanisms by reconstructing cellular proliferation, differentiation, and migration events from single-cell sequencing data. This...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Trustees of Dartmouth College $1,010,880 on May 1, 2026, under the Brain Research through Advancing Innovative Neurotechnologies (BRAIN) Initiative (CFDA 93.372) to translate a novel carbon-coated neurochemical sensor technology toward integrated neurotransmitter sensing in humans. Dartmouth will develop designs to integrate fast-scan cyclic voltammetry (FSCV)-based dopamine and neuromodulator sensing capabilities into...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the National Institutes of Health under the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded the University of Maryland, Baltimore $4.929 million on September 1, 2026, under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) to develop and validate a multi-omic, psychosocial, and environmental model of individual differences in pain and placebo responses. The project investigates chronic pain conditions, particularly...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded Massachusetts Institute of Technology $129,168 on August 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to support research on the modulation of autonomic function by affective pain pathways. The research interrogates the role of the parabrachial-limbic circuit and...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Leland Stanford Junior University $423,500 on June 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to dissociate neural representations of pain and salience using intracranial human brain recordings. The research will obtain intracranial electroencephalography (iEEG) measurements in 20 neurosurgical patients as they perform thermal pain and auditory...
- This $2,370,000 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke (NINDS), under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), aims to develop advanced human pluripotent stem cell (HPSC) tools to create comprehensive, region-specific models for studying pain circuitry. The award to Trustees of Tufts College (Tufts University) supports three main objectives: 1) Developing scalable methods to generate region-specific sensory neurons and...
- The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded Trustees of Dartmouth College $449,740 on August 1, 2026, through the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) to investigate membrane and protein-dependent regulation of cortical patterning during cytokinesis. The research examines how the cell cortex—comprising the plasma membrane and supporting filamentous actin cytoskeleton—remodels to divide cytoplasm into daughter cells, a process essential for human...
The National Institute of General Medical Sciences awarded the Trustees of Dartmouth College $449,625 under the Biomedical Research and Research Training program (CFDA 93.859) on August 5, 2026, to develop and validate digital biomarkers of postoperative pain derived from smartphones, wearable devices, and other digital health technologies. Over five years through March 31, 2031, the recipient's laboratory at Dartmouth will apply artificial intelligence and machine learning approaches to extract predictive features from digital health data and evaluate their utility for predicting persistent post-surgical pain across surgical populations, including patients without pre-existing pain. The research will leverage multimodal postoperative data to identify behavioral factors such as sleep and physical activity, and psychosocial factors including mood, anxiety, and social connection that drive postoperative pain fluctuations. Prior work by the principal investigator demonstrated a 34 percent improvement in prediction of persistent post-surgical pain among spine surgery patients using digital biomarkers derived from smartphones and wearable devices. The work is performed in Hanover, New Hampshire.
