This $3,096,164 Project Grant awarded by the National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA) under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279) will fund a study to evaluate the efficacy and implementation of a peer-led Motivational Interviewing (MI) intervention called MI-CHANCE. The intervention aims to promote uptake of drug checking services (DCS) and safer drug use behaviors among people who use drugs (PWUD) in San Diego County to reduce overdose incidence. The 5-year study will recruit 588 PWUD into a randomized controlled trial to test the efficacy of MI-CHANCE on overdose rates and mediating factors like knowledge, outcome expectancies, and self-efficacy. It will also conduct implementation evaluations on the acceptability, feasibility, and scalability of MI-CHANCE at syringe service programs in San Diego and 20 other U.S. locations. If effective, MI-CHANCE could be rapidly deployed at harm reduction programs nationwide to help reduce overdose deaths and disparities.
