The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), under the Drug Use and Addiction Research Programs (CFDA 93.279), awarded a $1,948,634 Project Grant to the Research Triangle Institute (RTI International) to develop and test a mobile health (mHealth) intervention to reduce overdose risk among people who engage in polysubstance use.

The proposed study will adapt an existing substance use disorder intervention, the Addiction Comprehensive Health Education Support System (A-CHESS), into a new intervention called OD-CHESS. In the R61 phase, RTI will partner with people who use drugs, local harm reduction providers, and the National Harm Reduction Coalition to adapt the A-CHESS model into OD-CHESS. The R33 phase will then conduct a randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of OD-CHESS, assess the persistence of the intervention's effects, and explore participants' experiences. The goal is to establish an evidence-based, scalable mHealth approach to overdose prevention that can be deployed in both urban and rural environments.
