The award funds research investigating mitochondrial gene regulation in central nervous system development, with focus on how the transcription...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded $132,133 to The Trustees of The University of Pennsylvania on December 1, 2025, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to define the degradative and inflammatory responses to mitochondrial damage in astrocytes. The research addresses how astrocytes, the most abundant cell type in the brain, respond to mitochondrial dysfunction associated with Parkinson's...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $126,900 on March 7, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research to exploit RNA biogenesis, specifically alternative splicing programs, to accelerate maturation of human neurons in vitro and to develop models of age-related tauopathies. The research addresses a fundamental...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai $670,266 on January 20, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to map the epigenomic and spatial transcriptomic landscape in Parkinson's disease and Alzheimer's disease. The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Yale University $462,855 under grant R21NS147184 on September 1, 2026, to develop and characterize isogenic neuronal cell models carrying mitochondrial DNA mutations implicated in neurological diseases. The recipient will establish human immortalized neuronal cell lines and induced pluripotent stem cell–derived neurons harboring pathogenic mitochondrial DNA mutations across oxidative phosphorylation complexes I, III, IV, V, and RNA genes using novel mitochondrial base editing technology. Functional characterization will include mitochondrial bioenergetics, neuronal activity, and transcriptomic profiling to validate model utility and identify shared and mutation-specific molecular signatures. In a second phase, the recipient will generate isogenic neuronal models carrying both mitochondrial DNA mutations and pathogenic nuclear mutations associated with Parkinson's disease to assess whether mitochondrial mutations exacerbate neurodegenerative phenotypes driven by nuclear mutations. The award is made under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853), a program supporting basic research exploring brain and nervous system structure and function to reduce the burden of neurological disease. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2028. Work is performed in New Haven, Connecticut.
