Project Grant R21HD119480
- The federal Project Grant award R03HD113887, provided by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), supports research to investigate the role of the ZFHX4 gene in lung mesenchyme development and its potential implications for understanding the pathogenesis of lung hypoplasia in congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH). The $164,990 award, with a performance period from August 1, 2024 to...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded Georgia TECH Research Corp $438,349 on August 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to develop a computational model integrating microstructural growth dynamics with preclinical data to advance congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) patch repair. The project addresses the high recurrence rate of CDH surgical repairs,...
- The National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute awarded The Washington University $545,304 on July 20, 2026, under the Cardiovascular Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.837) to support research into extracellular vesicles as a prenatal rescue therapy for abnormal lung vasculature development in congenital diaphragmatic hernia. The project investigates stem cell-derived nanoparticles called extracellular vesicles that contain bioactive molecules critical for normal lung development. Preliminary...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The General Hospital Corporation (Massachusetts General Hospital) $1,503,452 under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) on February 9, 2026. The research project, titled "Mechanistic Intersection Between Placental Vascular and Newborn Neuronal Development," investigates adverse neurodevelopmental outcomes in HIV-exposed but uninfected children born to pregnant people with...
- This $161,500 Project Grant was awarded by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865). The grant is intended to establish basic science-clinical collaborations to understand the molecular mechanisms of heterotaxy, a severe form of congenital heart disease that affects 3-4% of patients with congenital heart defects. The funding will support research at the University of Virginia to...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Massachusetts General Hospital $499,918 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate the genetic etiologies of stillbirth as an extreme manifestation within the developmental disorders continuum. The recipient will aggregate genomic and phenotypic data from an initial sequencing cohort of more than 1,000 stillbirth cases and their family members,...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The General Hospital Corporation (Massachusetts General Hospital) $443,954 on June 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct a four-year mixed-methods assessment of obstetric readiness in low-resource emergency departments. The research addresses the clinical gap created by closures of labor and delivery units that leave 2.3 million women of childbearing age in...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Massachusetts General Hospital $681,793 on June 23, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to map the neuroarchitecture and connectivity development of the human cerebellum during the first postnatal year using cross-scale imaging techniques. The research addresses the gap between in vivo and ex vivo imaging of perinatal cerebellar injury, which occurs in up to 19% of...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $456,500 to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center on June 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865). The award funds molecular characterization of human pregnancy-induced cervical epithelium through two research aims. First, the recipient will apply single-cell and spatial...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $716,738 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.HDR) for research on fibroblast growth factor (FGF) signaling in splenic development and the mechanisms underlying congenital asplenia. The award funds investigation of FGF-dependent cross talk between mesenchymal and mesothelial cells during spleen...
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Massachusetts General Hospital $466,740 on August 3, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate congenital diaphragmatic hernia (CDH) using fetal tracheal aspirates as a molecular and cellular window into hypoplastic lung development. The project will examine when an inflammatory signature—characterized by increased cytokeratin 5 and activated NFKB expression with diminished differentiation of secretory club cells and goblet cells—first manifests in CDH tracheal aspirate progenitor cells and whether these progenitors can be induced to differentiate as a measure of effective therapy. The research will harvest tracheal aspirates at three clinical timepoints during fetal endotracheal occlusion (FETO), a proven severe CDH therapy: at balloon deployment (28 weeks), balloon deflation (34 weeks), and as a newborn. The work will test whether steroids and NFKB inhibitors reverse the inflammatory signature in human tracheal cells, with implications for selecting therapeutics and optimizing their timing and dosing to improve lung differentiation. Work is performed at Massachusetts General Hospital's Research Management Division in Boston, Massachusetts. The award runs through July 31, 2028. This is an R21 project grant, which supports exploratory and developmental research.
