Project Grant R21AG095443
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Regents Of The University Of Colorado (doing business as University Of Colorado-Denver) $783,984 on March 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a multisite randomized controlled trial of GAPcareAD, a brief emergency department intervention addressing fall-related care needs for persons living with dementia and their care partners. The intervention adapts the GAPCARE fall prevention program for patients with Alzheimer's...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Colorado-Denver $793,312 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on April 1, 2026, to conduct feasibility and preliminary efficacy research on the Safe Transfers and Mobility Program (STAMP), a supplemental mobility intervention for skilled nursing facility patients. STAMP engages patients in walking and functional transfers—including bed mobility, sit-to-stands, and wheelchair transfers—throughout the day using trained mobility...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Colorado State University $808,980 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on September 1, 2026, to develop quantile-focused statistical tools and multimodal analyses that identify nonlinear genetic variants and interactions shaping Alzheimer's disease risk and cellular pathogenesis across key brain cell states. The project will create a comprehensive, distribution-aware genetic architecture atlas and deliver four primary products: quantile-specific...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Hebrew Rehabilitation Center $318,000 on August 18, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a pilot study of home-based dual-task gait assessment in older adults at risk of dementia. The project will recruit 60 ambulatory adults aged 65 and older—30 with mild cognitive impairment and 30 age- and sex-matched controls—to use a smartphone-based gait application for daily assessments in their homes over a two-week baseline period,...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Utah $603,165 on February 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to characterize the cognitive-motor processes underlying volitional stepping in fall prevention. The University of Utah will quantify electrocortical activity and stepping performance across age groups (younger and older adults) and task complexity levels by recruiting 30 healthy younger adults and 30 healthy older adults to complete a validated step...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the Regents of the University of Colorado $904,426 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a mixed-methods investigation of how neighborhood features shape cognitive health across the adult life course. The recipient will conduct in-depth interviews with 240 adults across San Francisco, Denver, Atlanta, and New York City to identify which neighborhood services, amenities, and hazards influence cognitive health...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Southern California $1,058,064 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a large-scale randomized controlled trial of CAPABLE—Community Aging in Place, Advancing Better Living for Elders—versus usual care in permanent supportive housing (PSH). CAPABLE is a 10-session, home-based intervention delivered over five months by an occupational therapist, registered nurse, and maintenance worker to address...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Mayo Clinic $729,906 on September 3, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the neurobiological substrates of falls in cognitively unimpaired older adults. The research uses dual-task paradigms that simultaneously engage motor and cognitive brain systems to characterize subclinical gait impairment patterns among cognitively unimpaired individuals who experience falls. The study assesses how gait impairment relates to...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Colorado-Denver $429,000 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on September 1, 2026, to develop clinical decision support tools and implementation guidance for primary care clinicians and patients navigating Alzheimer's disease blood biomarker testing and diagnostic decision-making. The project, R21AG104791, addresses a gap in primary care capacity to diagnose Alzheimer's disease and incorporate newly FDA-approved blood...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of California, Los Angeles $623,176 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct research on modifiable risk factors for Alzheimer's disease and related dementias among individuals aged 90 and older. The research triangulates evidence across four data sources—the LifeAfter90 Study (1,397 participants, all aged 90), the 90+ Study (1,630 participants, all aged 90), the Health and Retirement Study (3,359...
The National Institute on Aging awarded Colorado State University $231,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a pilot clinical trial assessing the feasibility, acceptability, and efficacy signal of a real-life dual-task training intervention for older adults at risk of falling. The study compares a six-week real-life dual-task training intervention (REAL-DTT) with an evidence-based fall prevention intervention (FallStalk). REAL-DTT delivers occupational therapy embedded in instrumental activities of daily living (IADLs)—including laundry, meal preparation, cleaning, shopping, medication management, public transportation, dishes and meal clean-up, and money management—using four protocolized levels of increasing task complexity for both cognitive and motor skill components. Participants complete structured debrief activities to identify higher-risk fall behaviors and reflect on attentional focus between motor and cognitive task demands. The trial enrolls 66 older adults and runs through August 31, 2028, with performance at Colorado State University in Fort Collins, Colorado. This is an assistance type Project Grant under the National Institute on Aging's mission to support biomedical and behavioral research directed toward understanding aging and addressing diseases and special problems of older populations.
