- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Colorado a Project Grant totaling $184,506 on August 7, 2025, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders (CFDA 93.853) program. This two-year award, with an ultimate completion date of July 31, 2027, supports research investigating the dual roles of amyloid beta (AB) in central nervous system neuropathogenesis associated with HIV-Associated Neurocognitive Disorder...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded $588,794 to the University of South Florida on July 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853). The award funds research investigating the functions of microglial laminin in blood-brain barrier repair and microglial activation following ischemic stroke. The research encompasses three aims: examining the function of microglial laminin in stroke...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke, part of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $594,435 to Oregon Health & Science University on August 15, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to conduct research on pericyte phenotypic switching in diabetic post-stroke cognitive impairment. The project, R01NS146933, investigates the cellular and molecular...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Miami $783,407 on August 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a randomized controlled trial of a health promotion intervention for older adults with HIV and documented cardiovascular risk. The study, titled "Strengthening Hearts and Minds: A Health Promotion Strategy for Older Adults with HIV," will enroll 180 adults age 50 and older and randomize them to either the HOPE (Happy Older People Are...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $1.809 million on June 5, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to develop novel preclinical models of neuroHIV that incorporate antiretroviral therapy suppression dynamics. The award funds development of next-generation neuroHIV models composed of autologous peripheral human immune cells, relevant human glial cell types, and an intact blood-brain barrier in the context of...
- The National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases awarded the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston $294,150 on August 1, 2026, for research on defective pro-viruses and viral proteins in neuroHIV and HIV cure strategies under the Allergy and Infectious Diseases Research program (CFDA 93.855). The research employs correlative microscopy (live-cell, confocal, and electron microscopy), mass spectrometry imaging, and spatial proteomic and mRNA analysis to detect, quantify, and...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Miami $164,766 on September 5, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct research on T cell senescence-driven immune dysfunction in aging and HIV. The research will establish a complete T cell senescence-associated secretory phenotype (SASP) atlas using fluorescence-activated cell sorting and mass spectrometry, then evaluate plasma biomarkers of T cell senescence during physiologic aging and in people with HIV. The...
The Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health Office of the Director awarded the University of Miami $153,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to conduct research targeting the NLRP3 inflammasome as a therapeutic link between HIV-1 infection and ischemic stroke. The research employs both in vivo and in vitro approaches to test the hypothesis that HIV-1-induced activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome aggravates ischemic stroke injury and delays recovery. Specific aims include evaluating whether HIV induces brain tissue toxicity via NLRP3 inflammasome activation, worsening stroke outcomes and impairing post-stroke tissue recovery, and determining whether targeting NLRP3 protects against HIV-1-enhanced ischemic injury in a triple primary cell culture model of the human blood-brain barrier. In vivo studies will employ wild-type and inflammasome-deficient mice infected with ECOHIV, followed by induction of ischemic stroke. The research addresses a critical gap in understanding HIV-associated neurovascular injury, as HIV infection significantly increases susceptibility to ischemic stroke, leading to larger infarct volumes, more severe neurological deficits, and delayed post-stroke recovery. Work is performed at the University of Miami's Office of Research Administration—School of Medicine Division in Miami, Florida. The period of performance runs through August 31, 2028.
