Project Grant R03HL181717
- This $158,976 Project Grant was awarded by the National Heart Lung and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) to The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) to investigate the mechanisms underlying hematopoietic disorders associated with Down syndrome (trisomy 21). The research aims to use a novel human induced pluripotent stem cell system to isolate the individual and synergistic roles of trisomy 21, the GATA1S transcription factor mutation, RUNX1 isoforms, and...
- This Cooperative Agreement award, funded by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Office of the Director under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310), will support a 5-year, longitudinal study entitled "Metabolic Health, Lifestyle, and Risk of Co-Occurring Health Conditions in Down Syndrome (MET-DS)". The study will enroll 200 participants aged 6-24 years with Down syndrome across 4 clinical sites to deeply characterize metabolic health, obesity, and lifestyle...
- This Project Grant award from the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 - Cardiovascular Diseases Research) supports research on the role of extracellular matrix (ECM) in the development of congenital heart defects associated with Down syndrome (DS). The $233,088 award will fund the development of 3D cardiac models to investigate how disruptions in ECM and cell-ECM interactions during heart development lead to downstream effects on cell signaling, cytoskeletal reorganization,...
- The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, National Institutes of Health (NIH) awarded a $1,017,548 Project Grant under the Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310) to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. The grant, titled "HOME GROWN: A FAMILY-BASED LIFESTYLE INTERVENTION TO SUPPORT HEALTHY DEVELOPMENT OF YOUNG CHILDREN WITH DOWN SYNDROME," will fund a 2-phase study to evaluate the feasibility (R61 phase) and efficacy (R33 phase) of a tailored healthy...
- The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) received a $732,541 Project Grant award from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) Trans-NIH Research Support program (CFDA 93.310). The goal of this 24-month grant, awarded on August 7, 2025, is to develop a transdisciplinary training program to foster a new generation of investigators to pursue research in youth and adults with Down syndrome (DS). The PARTNERS program will provide a week-long in-person short course at CHOP, supplemented by...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) in the amount of $195,041 supports research to elucidate the role of cardiovascular disease in the development of Alzheimer's disease in individuals with Down syndrome. The 2-year project will leverage data from the Alzheimer's Biomarker Consortium for Down Syndrome to develop innovative statistical models combining Bayesian inference and machine learning. These methods will explore...
- This Project Grant award from the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health (CFDA 93.310 Trans-NIH Research Support) provides $446,096 to the University of Illinois to develop and implement community-based participatory health research with young adults with Down syndrome. The project aims to reflect the perspectives and lived experiences of adults with Down syndrome, including those from underserved and underrepresented communities, to reduce health disparities and...
- This federal Project Grant award from the Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (CFDA 93.865 - Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research) is providing $661,575 to Children's Hospital Los Angeles to conduct a 5-year study on Down Syndrome Regression Disorder (DSRD). The principal investigator, Dr. Jonathan D. Santoro, is an international expert on DSRD, a neuropsychiatric condition in individuals with Down Syndrome that causes severe...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) awarded a $163,813 Project Grant to the University of Colorado-Denver (UCD) for the project "Improving Health Care Communication and Engagement for Adults with Down Syndrome." The 5-year grant, starting on September 3, 2025, aims to address health disparities experienced by individuals with Down syndrome by developing and piloting a patient-and-supporter-driven communication tool tailored for adults with Down...
- This federal Project Grant award for $152,816.00, provided by the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (CFDA 93.865 - Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research), aims to investigate the link between Down's syndrome (trisomy 21) and placentation defects. The research will focus on: Identifying transcriptional differences in implantation-stage trophoblasts between trisomy 21 and euploid induced pluripotent stem cell lines through RNA-sequencing. Assessing the...
The Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) has been awarded a $1,029,350 project grant by the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute (CFDA 93.837 Cardiovascular Diseases Research) to conduct a study titled "Cardiometabolic Risk and Comorbidities in Adults with Down Syndrome - Electronic Health Record Examination (CASCADE)". The study aims to: Describe the prevalence of type 2 diabetes, dyslipidemia, hypertension, and obstructive sleep apnea, as well as quantify HbA1c and lipid levels, in adults with Down syndrome. Examine the relationships between cardiometabolic conditions and common co-occurring conditions (e.g., congenital heart disease, obesity, cancer survivorship) and demographics (age, sex, race/ethnicity) in this population. Explore microvascular complications in the subset of adults with Down syndrome who have diabetes. Quantify screening rates for cardiometabolic conditions in this population. The project will leverage de-identified electronic health record data from the TRINetX network of healthcare organizations to conduct this research. The award period is from September 15, 2025 to August 31, 2027.
