- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $117,747 on May 22, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to support research on neural computations underlying flexible control of behavioral strategies and problem-solving. The award funds a K99 Pathway to Independence Award project combining large-scale electrophysiology with closed-loop optogenetics in freely behaving rats performing strategy-switching...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $832,307 on April 24, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to support research into the genetic control of basal telencephalic development and the transcriptional and epigenetic mechanisms governing forebrain GABAergic neuron differentiation. The research addresses dysregulation of basal ganglia and cortical development as a central factor in epilepsy,...
- The National Institute of Nursing Research awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $836,590 on June 23, 2026, under the Nursing Research program (CFDA 93.361) to support research on the long-term impacts and mechanisms of financial programming on mental health of young adults. The project extends the BEEM Study, a randomized wait-list-controlled trial examining the impact of economic intervention—including cash payments and opt-in financial mentoring—on physical,...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $800,384 on March 10, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to conduct molecular and functional dissection of prefrontal-hippocampal long-range inhibition. The project investigates a novel long-range GABAergic pathway from prefrontal cortex to hippocampus that mediates top-down control of hippocampal function. The research will elucidate mechanisms through...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $200,376 on April 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to conduct research investigating intergenerational stress transmission mechanisms and their impact on child mental health outcomes. The project, titled "Understanding and Altering Prenatal Immune Function and Parenting to Improve Child Mental Health: Investigating Intergenerational Stress...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded $451,000 to The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco on August 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) for a Project Grant (R21MH144687) running through July 31, 2028. The award funds research to develop synthetic organizer cells that control multi-axis patterning in three-dimensional brain organoids. Current organoid generation methods lack reproducibility in cell-type patterning and spatial...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $164,000 on May 4, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to examine the cumulative impact of violent and non-violent political events on the relationship between food insecurity and mental health in conflict-affected settings. The recipient will conduct longitudinal analysis using geo-location political events data and three waves of repeated cross-sectional...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the Research Foundation For Mental Hygiene, Inc. (operating through its New York State Psychiatric Institute division) $1.844 million on May 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to conduct a treatment optimization study for anorexia nervosa relapse prevention. The award funds an optimization experiment using the Multiphase Optimization Strategy (MOST) framework to evaluate competing versions of four behavioral...
- The National Institute of Mental Health awarded the University of California, Berkeley $815,743 on August 12, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to conduct a rigorous evaluation of mobile crisis response services for suicide prevention. The award funds a quasi-experimental instrumental variables study and qualitative analysis of the A3 Crisis Response Program in Contra Costa County, California, which operates a 24/7 crisis call center and 30+ mobile crisis...
The National Institute of Mental Health awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $410,000 on August 1, 2026, under the Mental Health Research Grants program (CFDA 93.242) to develop and test a single-session consultation protocol for treatment-seeking youth with eating disorders and their caregivers while waiting for specialty care access. The research follows a Type I hybrid effectiveness-implementation trial structure. UCSF will conduct a preparatory phase engaging key stakeholders, then evaluate feasibility and acceptability of the single-session consultation and evaluation methods through an iterative case series with 10 families. Following that, the recipient will conduct a pilot randomized controlled trial with 44 families to evaluate engagement, preliminary efficacy in activating hypothesized mechanisms of change (hope, self-efficacy, motivation), symptom change, and promotion of later treatment engagement. The study will use the RE-AIM framework to collect implementation indicators throughout. The award yields a finalized single-session consultation protocol and assessment procedures for use in a fully powered randomized controlled trial. Period of performance runs from August 1, 2026, through April 30, 2029. Work is performed in San Francisco, California.
