The research develops animal models incorporating clinically analogous epidural spinal cord stimulation to understand how neuromodulation can restore autonomic function...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Arizona State University $160,620 on June 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to characterize bilateral ankle mechanics post-stroke and their relationship to impaired posture and gait function. The project addresses knowledge gaps in how stroke affects ankle joint control during upright posture and walking. Previous stroke research has been limited to seated...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $534,557 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to investigate the role of Renshaw cells and recurrent inhibition during motor behaviors. The research examines how Renshaw cells—inhibitory interneurons within the spinal cord's output-regulating microcircuit—contribute to coordinated limb movements and motor control in...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) awarded a $472,325 Project Grant to the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago (doing business as Shirley Ryan AbilityLab) on August 4, 2025, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865). The project, "Quantifying Selective Motor Control in Preterm Infants: A Computer Vision Approach," will develop and validate a computer...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University $454,240 on August 15, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Projects program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct a longitudinal study measuring changes in peripheral nerve signaling following stroke. The research will examine whether brain lesions disrupt peripheral nerve function responsible for tactile perception, a gap in current understanding of...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Corporation $170,640 on July 15, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to support a K23 career development award investigating childhood stroke predictors of motor recovery. The award funds a physician-scientist's career development and research program centered on neurorecovery mechanisms in pediatric acquired brain injury, with...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Duke University $100,228 on December 16, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853, assistance type: Project Grant F31NS149497). The project investigates cell-type-specific contributions of the primary somatosensory cortex to skilled forelimb control using two-photon calcium microscopy, optogenetic perturbation, genetic access to projection neuron types...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded New York University $179,495 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate movement anxiety in stroke patients during inpatient rehabilitation. The research will prospectively track upper extremity movement anxiety in subacute stroke patients using the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, clinical scales, electronic health record data, and wrist-worn...
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded Emory University $460,839 on September 1, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to cultivate rigor in movement neuroscience research by aligning professional incentives with rigorous study design practices. Emory will establish community-focused programs to address the reproducibility crisis in movement neuroscience by creating incentives that...
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Emory University $651,940 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate altered cortical control of heteronymous spinal reflex pathways as a mechanism of lower limb motor impairment after stroke. The research examines how damage to the motor cortex impairs modulatory control of heteronymous reflexes—spinal pathways that normally promote coordinated muscle activity across joints through excitatory length feedback and inhibitory force-related feedback. The study focuses on reflexes from the quadriceps to the soleus muscle, which normally remain cortically modulated during standing and walking but become excessive and poorly regulated after stroke, causing inappropriate co-activation and limiting balance and walking recovery. Principal Investigator Lyle and Co-Investigators Kesar and Ting will rigorously examine quadriceps-to-soleus reflex modulation across functional contexts to establish mechanistic links between reflex dysregulation and clinically relevant motor deficits, with Aim 1 determining how limb loading and postural orientation influence reflex magnitudes. Performance occurs at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia. The award period runs from September 1, 2026, through May 31, 2031. This is assistance funding classified as a Project Grant.
