Project Grant R21HD117190
- The National Institute of Neurological Disorders and Stroke awarded the University of Texas at Austin $393,284 on June 13, 2026, under the Extramural Research Programs in the Neurosciences and Neurological Disorders program (CFDA 93.853) to conduct basic research on synaptic structural plasticity and stroke rehabilitation. The project examines how the brain remodels neural circuitry following stroke, with focus on reactive synaptogenesis—the growth of new connections among surviving neurons near...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of Utah $667,666 on June 3, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Projects program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct a multimodal intervention study combining transcranial random noise stimulation with functional electrical stimulation-assisted task-specific practice to promote motor recovery and upper-extremity function in stroke survivors with chronic moderate-to-severe impairment. The...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Arizona State University $160,620 on June 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to characterize bilateral ankle mechanics post-stroke and their relationship to impaired posture and gait function. The project addresses knowledge gaps in how stroke affects ankle joint control during upright posture and walking. Previous stroke research has been limited to seated...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of Maryland, Baltimore $433,595 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct a proof-of-concept study examining whether blood flow restriction combined with low-intensity resistance training enhances force generation and motor performance in stroke survivors with upper extremity paresis. The study will enroll thirty-two participants with...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Emory University $651,940 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate altered cortical control of heteronymous spinal reflex pathways as a mechanism of lower limb motor impairment after stroke. The research examines how damage to the motor cortex impairs modulatory control of heteronymous reflexes—spinal pathways that normally promote coordinated...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development, part of the National Institutes of Health, awarded the University of Illinois $110,228 on December 3, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to develop a markerless motion-capture tool for objectively evaluating motor impairments in stroke survivors. The project, titled "Action Likelihood to Evaluate Weakness, Abnormal Motor Synergies, and Spasticity in Stroke Survivors,"...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded The Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Corporation $170,640 on July 15, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to support a K23 career development award investigating childhood stroke predictors of motor recovery. The award funds a physician-scientist's career development and research program centered on neurorecovery mechanisms in pediatric acquired brain injury, with...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill received a $414,376 Project Grant from the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865), awarded July 9, 2025, with a completion date of June 30, 2027. The grant funds research investigating the modulation of beta oscillatory rhythms in stroke patients to promote corticomuscular circuit function—the neural...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded New York University $179,495 on September 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to investigate movement anxiety in stroke patients during inpatient rehabilitation. The research will prospectively track upper extremity movement anxiety in subacute stroke patients using the Tampa Scale of Kinesiophobia, clinical scales, electronic health record data, and wrist-worn...
- The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded the University of Virginia $124,971 under CFDA 93.865 (Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research) on July 1, 2026, to investigate how systemic infection and innate immune signaling influence brain development and adult physiology. The project examines the effects of early-life infection and immune activation on neural development, focusing on how immune signaling disrupts neural stem cell proliferation,...
The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development awarded Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University $454,240 on August 15, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research Projects program (CFDA 93.865) to conduct a longitudinal study measuring changes in peripheral nerve signaling following stroke. The research will examine whether brain lesions disrupt peripheral nerve function responsible for tactile perception, a gap in current understanding of post-stroke sensory impairment. Virginia Tech will apply electrotactile stimuli along the median, radial, and ulnar nerves and measure peripheral nerve responses using surface electrodes at 1, 2, 4, and 6 months post stroke in a diverse sample of 20 individuals with stroke. The study will measure the nerve's capacity to transmit signals, the magnitude and speed of signal transmission, and whether the extent of peripheral nerve disruption correlates with sensorimotor impairments from the stroke. The insights are intended to improve how post-stroke impairments are assessed and enhance predictions of movement recovery. Performance takes place in Virginia. The period of performance runs from August 15, 2026, through July 31, 2028.
