- The National Eye Institute awarded Oregon Health & Science University $498,180 on September 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to develop and apply novel optical coherence tomography (OCT) methods for detecting and monitoring photoreceptor changes associated with age-related macular degeneration. The project runs through August 31, 2030, with performance based in Portland, Oregon. Aim 1 investigates cone photoreceptor function impairments in AMD through advancement of...
- The National Eye Institute awarded The Methodist Hospital Research Institute $1,029,472 on May 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to develop mitochondrial-based cell therapy for age-related macular degeneration. The recipient will create a sustainable source of mitochondria proximal to the retinal pigment epithelium using mesenchymal stem cells transfected with nuclear respiratory factor 1 (NRF1), a driver of mitochondrial biogenesis. The work aims to determine how NRF1...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Eye Institute (NEI) awarded a $638,625 Project Grant to the University of California, San Diego, effective August 1, 2025 through July 31, 2028, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867). The award funds research to investigate the mechanisms of drusen formation in age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a leading cause of blindness affecting approximately 196 million people globally. The research employs a novel quartz crystal microbalance assay...
- The National Eye Institute awarded Synvivo Inc. $290,400 on September 15, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to develop the first standardized, commercial retinal barrier-on-chip using donor-matched human primary retinal pigment epithelial and choroidal endothelial cells for age-related macular degeneration (AMD) therapeutic testing. The National Eye Institute awarded The Leland Stanford Junior University $666,976 on August 1, 2026, under the Vision Research program (CFDA 93.867) to map age-related macular degeneration (AMD) using precision proteomics and molecular aging analysis. The recipient will deploy the TEMPO (Tracing Expression of Multiple Protein Origins) platform to profile protein biomarkers and identify cellular drivers of AMD in living patients using human liquid biopsy samples. TEMPO integrates aptamer-based microvolume liquid biopsy proteomics, single-cell transcriptomics, and artificial intelligence to examine disease mechanisms at the cellular level in vivo. Preliminary studies using this method identified hundreds of specific protein markers for individual retinal cell types and detected over 5,900 proteins in aqueous humor samples. The project will apply proteomic clock analysis to determine the relationship between molecular aging and AMD prognosis, with the long-term goal of developing sensitive and patient-specific molecular diagnostics, prognostics, and treatments for retinal disease. Work is performed in Palo Alto, California. The period of performance runs from August 1, 2026, through March 31, 2030. This is a Project Grant, a non-renewable assistance type under NEI's Vision Research program.
