- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Johns Hopkins University $798,088 on August 21, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and validate non-invasive predictive models for assessing acute tubular injury and interstitial fibrosis and tubular atrophy on kidney biopsy. The research leverages the Novel Approaches in the Investigation of Kidney Disease (NAIKID) study, an ongoing...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of California, San Diego $5.667 million on September 15, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate renal metabolism in sepsis-associated acute kidney injury. The recipient will employ a comprehensive investigative approach to examine changes in kidney metabolism during sepsis-associated AKI that impact injury and recovery of kidney...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded $711,430 to the University of Pittsburgh on July 27, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate the role of sex-specific microRNA regulation in acute kidney injury. The research examines how sex-differentially expressed microRNAs, particularly the mir-1792 cluster, protect tubular epithelial cells during acute kidney injury by repressing...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Pennsylvania $691,758 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate DCLK1 isoform switching and its role in proximal tubule injury during kidney disease progression. The award funds basic research to understand how DCLK1 regulates inflammation and DNA damage response pathways in injured proximal tubule cells, which...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Oregon Health & Science University $164,745 on April 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate the mechanisms of maternal renal and gestational dysfunction following recovered acute kidney injury. The research uses an in vivo mouse model of rhabdomyolysis-induced acute kidney injury (RIAKI) to test the hypothesis that recovered RIAKI causes...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, an institute within the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded the Regents of the University of Michigan $690,854 on February 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds research to identify molecular and genetic mechanisms that determine and maintain kidney epithelial cell states in normal physiology and in...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $650,509 on August 20, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate the myeloid ferritin–CXCL3 axis as a driver of acute kidney injury (AKI) progression to chronic kidney disease. The research leverages novel transgenic mice with targeted deletion of ferritin genes in myeloid cells to determine whether myeloid...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Alabama at Birmingham $173,232 on May 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds basic research into renal endothelial cell signaling in sepsis-associated acute kidney injury (SA-AKI) preceded by viral priming. The research examines how renal endothelial cells respond to poly(I:C), a synthetic analog of viral double-stranded...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Washington $192,763 on March 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847), a Project Grant supporting basic and clinical biomedical research that improves understanding of disease mechanisms and leads to improved prevention, diagnosis, and treatment. The award funds a prospective nested cohort study investigating mechanisms of kidney...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the Veterans Medical Research Foundation of San Diego $383,098 on September 2, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The recipient will conduct research into kidney tubule dysfunction in APOL1-associated chronic kidney disease, with focus on developing and validating tubular biomarkers that capture kidney functions—nutrient reabsorption and toxin...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Johns Hopkins University $614,186 on August 20, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate the role of intestinal microbiota and immune cell trafficking in acute kidney injury repair. The research examines mechanistic pathways by which immune cells mediate recovery from severe acute kidney injury via microbiome-mediated migration from the intestine to the injured kidney. Prior work by the investigative team demonstrated that amoxicillin treatment initiated after established acute kidney injury accelerates kidney recovery and reduces fibrosis in mice, with the protective effect dependent on CD8+ T cells and an intact microbiota. The project will use cell tracking dyes and transgenic mice to investigate immune cell trafficking from Peyer's patches in the small intestine to post-ischemic kidney tissue, with particular focus on chemokine involvement in cell migration and the interaction between immune cells and gut microbiota during the recovery process. Performance occurs in Baltimore, Maryland, with a period of performance from August 20, 2026, through May 31, 2030. The assistance type is a Project Grant.
