- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Leland Stanford Junior University $5.583 million on July 10, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to analyze immune tolerance mechanisms in Type 1 Diabetes patients receiving sequential B cell depletion and T cell costimulatory blockade therapy. The award funds research analyzing T cell and B cell compartments before and after treatment with sequential...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $562,826 on August 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct basic research on irreversible electroporation (IRE)-mediated hepatocyte transplantation as a treatment for inborn errors of metabolism. The research addresses the limited availability of donor organs for liver transplantation by...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Florida $735,969 on August 10, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop and test microgels for localized immune control in beta cell replacement therapy for type 1 diabetes. The work combines cell and biomaterials engineering to create stem cell-derived beta cells functionalized with negative regulators of immunity—specifically...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $819,556 on August 27, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The research investigates the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying melanocortin-4 receptor (MC4R) activity-dependent trafficking and ciliary localization. MC4R is essential for body weight regulation and represents a...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK), an institute of the Department of Health and Human Services National Institutes of Health, awarded $795,620 to the University of Massachusetts Medical School on July 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds development and validation of gene-editing technologies to engineer stem cell-derived islets for type 1 diabetes treatment. The research...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Cornell University $1,009,332 on September 25, 2025, to develop an immunomodulatory and vascularized cell delivery device for type 1 diabetes cell therapy under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The project aims to engineer a subcutaneous, cell-retaining device that permits blood vessel penetration and establishes an immunotolerant environment for islet delivery in...
- Federal Project Grant Award Summary The University of California, San Francisco received a $3.18 million Project Grant award from the National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847), effective September 15, 2025, with a completion date of September 14, 2029. This four-year research initiative investigates the role of the macrophage scavenger receptor MARCO (macrophage receptor...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco $819,998 on July 20, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847, Project Grant R01DK148614). UCSF will engineer synthetic suppressor T cells designed to protect transplanted islet beta cells from immune rejection in insulin-dependent diabetes treatment. The research systematically screens combinatorial immune suppressive payloads to identify those that block key rejection mechanisms—including CD4+ and CD8+ cell-mediated rejection and complement-driven humoral rejection. Synthetic suppressor cells will be triggered by engineered synnotch receptors that detect beta-cell-surface antigens such as GLP1R, enabling locally targeted immune suppression without systemic immunosuppression. The project will test candidate combinations in in vivo immune rejection models. UCSF will also introduce modifications to increase synthetic suppressor cell survival and persistence, including autocrine cytokine versions designed to support long-term engraftment. Work is performed in San Francisco, California. The period of performance runs from July 20, 2026, through May 31, 2030.
