The project will generate interaction-focused polygenic scores quantifying differences in omega-3 fatty acid...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The General Hospital Corporation, doing business as Massachusetts General Hospital, $835,245 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award funds research to evaluate evidence-based strategies for preventing weight regain after discontinuation of high-dose glucagon-like peptide-1 (GLP-1) agonist therapy in adults with obesity history but...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Massachusetts General Hospital $158,960 on September 30, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct genetic research on taste preferences and their relationship to metabolic disease risk and GLP-1 receptor agonist response. The research will perform genome-wide association studies of five taste preferences, apply Mendelian randomization and polygenic...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The Broad Institute, Inc. $1,647,485 on September 19, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct massive-scale genomic risk assessment across monogenic and common forms of diabetes. The award will support analysis of the largest dataset of rare variation linked to diabetes phenotyping, comprising more than 1.1 million participants (33 percent...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Emory University $824,296 on February 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to identify novel type 2 diabetes phenotypes and assess their association with diabetes complications through longitudinal analysis of clinical data and polygenic risk scores. The research leverages the Kaiser Permanente Research Bank cohort, a nationally representative dataset...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The General Hospital Corporation $561,565 on July 30, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a Project Grant (R01DK145514) investigating the molecular mechanisms by which testican-2 protects against chronic kidney disease. The award funds research establishing the protective effect of circulating testican-2 in clinically relevant kidney disease...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded $123,750 to Massachusetts General Hospital on February 4, 2026, for development of an audio-based digital intervention to improve diabetes medication adherence among Latino adults with low health literacy. The recipient, The General Hospital Corporation (doing business as Massachusetts General Hospital), will develop AudibleDiabetesRx, an audio-based tool delivering on-demand, Spanish-language medication information...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Brigham & Women's Hospital Inc. $899,135 on August 15, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a prospective study characterizing the serological microbial-viral interactome and gut microbiome-virome in type 2 diabetes development. The research uses phage immunoprecipitation sequencing (PHIP-SEQ) to profile antibody responses to a large antigen...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The General Hospital Corporation (Massachusetts General Hospital) $990,000 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct a pilot study testing whether polygenic architecture can inform targeted screening and treatment strategies for type 1 and type 2 diabetes. The research implements a genetics-first, recall-by-genotype framework embedded in the Mass General Brigham health system. In Aim 1, researchers will use a multi-ancestry type 1 diabetes polygenic score and screen 150 adults in the top 2.5% of genetic risk for islet autoantibodies (GAD65, IA-2, ZNT8, and insulin). Participants with one positive antibody will complete an oral glucose tolerance test to assess glycemia and candidacy for preventive immunotherapy, with results returned to participants and clinicians via standardized pathway. The study will quantify clinical features marking autoimmunity and estimate numbers-needed-to-screen across alternative polygenic thresholds. In Aim 2, researchers will recruit 100 adults—25 per high-risk polygenic score category (B-cell dysfunction, obesity, lipodystrophy-like phenotypes) and 25 controls from the interquartile range—to complete baseline physiologic phenotyping via liquid mixed-meal tolerance testing and other pathway-specific challenges. The award leverages the MGB biobank linked with electronic health records (>65,000 genotyped individuals). Work is performed in Boston, Massachusetts, with a period of performance from September 1, 2026, through August 31, 2029.
