Project Grant R01DK148251
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Baylor College of Medicine $240,000 on August 27, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop preclinical mouse models expressing HIV proteins that replicate metabolic comorbidities observed in persons living with HIV, including obesity, cardiovascular disease, chronic kidney disease, osteoporosis, cancers, frailty, and cognitive decline. The research...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Texas Biomedical Research Institute $905,998 on September 1, 2026, to investigate epigenetic mechanisms driving intestinal epithelial dysfunction in people living with HIV receiving antiretroviral therapy, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The research examines how aberrant DNA methylation and altered chromatin accessibility in colonic epithelium contribute...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded The University of Chicago $123,000 on June 16, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to characterize adipocyte heterogeneity and response to metabolic stress. The funded research uses single-nucleus RNA sequencing and a humanized mouse model to investigate how diverse stimuli influence white adipocyte development and specification, with emphasis on...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Northwestern University $794,032 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate mechanisms of intestinal barrier dysfunction in people living with HIV on antiretroviral therapy and to evaluate restoration of the glycan A1,2-fucose as a therapeutic intervention. The research addresses persistent gut leakiness and microbial translocation in...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Northwestern University $811,941 on September 3, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to develop three-dimensional intestinal organoid models that investigate the bidirectional relationship between HIV transcription and intestinal barrier function in people living with HIV. The research uses complementary organoid platforms: patient-derived organoids isolated...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Tulane University $840,005 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate the role of aryl hydrocarbon receptor (AHR) signaling in intestinal barrier function and inflammation during antiretroviral therapy-suppressed simian immunodeficiency virus infection. The research defines how gut AHR signaling preserves epithelial barrier...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded the University of Illinois $777,090 on August 24, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to conduct basic research into the CCL22-CCR4 chemokine axis and its role in adipose tissue beiging and obesity prevention. The research investigates how macrophage-derived chemokine CCL22 and its receptor CCR4 regulate the recruitment and function of beige adipocyte...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases, part of the National Institutes of Health under the Department of Health and Human Services, awarded $717,030 to the University of Virginia on May 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to uncover neural circuits controlling body weight and metabolism. The research develops and applies RAMPANT (rabies afferent mapping by poly-A nuclear transcriptomics), a novel...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) awarded a $451,000 Project Grant to The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco on September 5, 2025, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847). The award supports a two-year research initiative (completion by August 31, 2027) investigating the role of microRNAs in adipose tissue dysfunction among people with HIV (PWH) who...
- The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases awarded Duke University $832,783 under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) on February 1, 2026, to define cellular and molecular signatures of inflammation in people with HIV on antiretroviral therapy that promote chronic kidney disease. The research employs a dual-cohort approach: retrospective analysis of plasma inflammatory endotypes in aging people with HIV (age 50 and...
The National Institute of Diabetes and Digestive and Kidney Diseases (NIDDK) awarded the University of Illinois $882,709 on September 1, 2026, under the Diabetes, Digestive, and Kidney Diseases Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.847) to investigate adipose tissue dysfunction in simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV)-infected rhesus macaques treated with combination antiretroviral therapy (cART). The research addresses lipodystrophy and metabolic complications that affect over 75% of chronic HIV patients on cART. The study will use a nonhuman primate model to test whether both SIV infection and antiretroviral drugs impair the maturation of adipose stem cells into functional adipocytes, disrupting fat metabolism and accelerating cellular aging. The research team will assess the effects of SIV infection alone, cART alone, and their combination on adipocytes and adipose stem cells, tracking longitudinal changes in the same animals before and after infection and treatment. Fat distribution will be monitored via CT imaging, digital immunohistochemistry, and flow cytometry of biopsies; mechanisms underlying tissue alterations will be determined at necropsy. Performance of work is located in Fort Worth, Texas. The period of performance runs through July 31, 2031.
