Project Grant R01AG104132
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of South Carolina $322,500 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms of cognitive decline in aging and Alzheimer's disease, with focus on D-serine metabolism and NMDAR signaling in the hippocampus. The research uses rodent models and human tissue samples to examine the roles of serine racemase and D-amino acid oxidase in hippocampal learning, memory, and NMDAR...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded The Trustees of Columbia University in the City of New York $452,375 on January 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the role of semaphorin 3A in microglial activation and Alzheimer's disease pathology. The research will determine the functional role and mechanistic basis for semaphorin 3A–mediated regulation of microglial activation in Alzheimer's disease. Building on preliminary findings using human induced pluripotent...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Virginia $583,815 on August 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to support research into oligodendrocyte lineage dysfunction during aging and Alzheimer's disease. The project aims to understand how myelin loss—a pathology common to both aging and Alzheimer's disease—develops in the central nervous system and to identify therapeutic targets for cognitive impairment. The research focuses on oligodendrocyte precursor...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Tufts Medical Center Parent, Inc. (doing business as Tufts Medical Center) $357,000 under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) on September 1, 2026, to investigate endothelial pannexin1-induced inflammation in Alzheimer's disease. The research tests the hypothesis that amyloid-beta upregulates cerebral endothelial pannexin1 expression, which promotes vascular dysfunction and Alzheimer's disease progression through increased neuroinflammation and...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $1,212,742 to the Sloan-Kettering Institute for Cancer Research on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate epichaperomes as a mechanism for restoring drug responsiveness in Alzheimer's disease. The research tests the hypothesis that epichaperome inhibition with PU-AD restores synaptic architecture and re-enables responsiveness to levetiracetam (LEV), a therapy whose efficacy depends on properly localized SV2A...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of Pittsburgh $664,619 on January 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to develop multiscale computational and experimental models of neurometabolic coupling across age-related cognitive decline and late-onset Alzheimer's disease. The research integrates in vivo two-photon microscopy, multispectral wide-field imaging, and magnetic resonance imaging to characterize the relationship between neuronal activity and metabolic...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded Duke University $1.597 million on September 15, 2025, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to support research on epitranscriptomic regulation of microglia in Alzheimer's disease. The research investigates how m6a methylation of adenosine residues in messenger RNA regulates microglial cell function and transitions between resting and activated states during Alzheimer's disease pathogenesis, with the goal of identifying novel...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded $427,625 to The Washington University on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to probe cerebellar cortex computations in Alzheimer's disease. The work examines cerebellar nodulus and uvula function in two Alzheimer's disease mouse models—APP/PS1 and 3XTG-AD—at 3, 6, and 12 months of disease progression to assess how hallmarks of Alzheimer's disease contribute to cerebellar dysfunction. The project tests the hypothesis that...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded New York University $712,578 on February 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to conduct a prospective study identifying viral infections associated with cognition decline and Alzheimer's disease risk across three prospective cohorts. The award supports comprehensive serologic profiling using VirScan, a bacteriophage immunoprecipitation sequencing technology, to detect immune responses to human viruses and analyze antiviral antibodies in...
- The National Institute on Aging awarded the University of South Carolina $249,000 on August 15, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the effects of frontotemporal dementia and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis mutations in RNA-binding proteins on mRNA transport and local translation. The research uses induced pluripotent stem cell-derived neurons with CRISPR-edited FTD/ALS mutations in RNA-binding proteins (TDP-43, FUS, HNRNPA1, HNRNPA2, MATR3, and TIA1) to determine...
The National Institute on Aging awarded The Medical University of South Carolina $443,940 on September 1, 2026, under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the link between Alzheimer's disease and improved anti-cancer immunity through regulation of mitochondrial ceramide metabolism in T-cells. The research tests the hypothesis that amyloid precursor protein and amyloid-beta peptides accumulate in T-cell mitochondria of aging patients with Alzheimer's disease, inhibiting ceramide-dependent mitophagy and enhancing anti-tumor T-cell function. Preliminary data indicate that this mechanism may explain the observed inverse association between Alzheimer's disease and aging-associated cancer incidence. The project will examine how abnormal APP accumulation affects mitochondrial clearance in neurons and aging T-cells, and whether attenuated ceramide-dependent mitophagy enhances T-cell bioenergetics and anti-tumor activity in the context of Alzheimer's disease pathology. The period of performance runs from September 1, 2026, through May 31, 2031. Work is performed in Charleston, South Carolina.
