The National Institute on Aging (NIA) awarded a $1,244,902 Project Grant under the Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) to Harvard T.H. Chan School of Public Health, with a start date of September 30, 2024 and an ultimate completion date of July 31, 2029. The grant, titled "Lifestyle Factors and Longevity (LIFELONG) Study", aims to evaluate the impact of dietary and other modifiable factors on the likelihood of older adults achieving exceptional longevity (living to age 90). The study will leverage a consortium of 11 large, well-characterized prospective cohorts worldwide, with nearly 317,000 participants aged 60-75 years, including over 31,000 individuals who lived to age 90. The research will examine the associations between commonly consumed foods, dietary fiber, food group diversity, adherence to planetary health diets, and lifestyle scores with exceptional longevity, accounting for potential modifying effects of sociodemographic, behavioral, and health factors. Columbia University is a sub-grantee and will provide scientific contributions to the analyses around dietary and lifestyle scores, as well as ultra-processed foods and longevity.
