The 2-year project, running from September 2025 to August 2027, will be conducted by the Medical University of South Carolina. The research...
- The federal Project Grant award of $415,743.00 from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173), supports research by Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) on the origins and roles of macrophages in the development, homeostasis, and repair of the tympanic membrane (eardrum). The 5-year project, commencing on February 1, 2025, aims to investigate the fundamental...
- This federal Project Grant award of $296,536.00 from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173), will support research to investigate the underlying mechanisms of the medial olivocochlear (MOC) efferent system and its role in hearing in noise. The project aims to enhance understanding of the MOC system's input pathways, particularly from the inferior colliculus, and how...
- This federal Project Grant award for $486,750.00 was provided by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders (CFDA 93.173) program. The grant supports research to explore the morphological changes and cell polarity mechanisms in supporting cells of the inner ear, which play a critical role in auditory function. The primary awardee, the Jackson Laboratory, a nonprofit biomedical research...
- This federal Project Grant award of $581,105 from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) supports research to develop natural-based therapies for preventing hearing loss caused by aminoglycoside antibiotics. The key products and services being delivered include: Designing, synthesizing, and testing piperlongumine derivatives with improved pharmacological properties and...
- This $647,518 Project Grant award, provided by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders (CFDA 93.173) program, supports research investigating the impact of cochlear synaptopathy on brainstem mechanisms of monaural temporal processing and binaural hearing. The study aims to understand the neural mechanisms and loci in the auditory system that produce listening difficulties, which can emerge...
- This federal Project Grant award of $673,048 was provided by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173). The objective is to investigate the role of mitochondrial calcium regulation in cochlear hair cells and its contribution to acquired hearing loss, with a focus on assessing the impact of acoustic overstimulation and developing strategies to mitigate noise-induced...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD), under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173), provides $767,494 to the University of Miami to develop human inner ear organoid platforms for studying genetic hearing loss and vestibular disorders. The key objectives are to: 1) establish and optimize human induced pluripotent stem cell-derived 3D inner ear organoid systems from patients with...
- This $473,749 Project Grant was awarded by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) on September 11, 2025. The grant is for a project titled "In-silico Screen and In-vivo Evaluation of FDA-Approved Drugs to Treat Noise-Induced Hearing Loss" conducted by the Massachusetts Eye And Ear Infirmary, a non-profit hospital and research institution affiliated with Harvard...
- This $187,510 federal Project Grant was awarded by the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173). The grant will support research to understand the mechanisms and clinical impact of neo-ossification (new bone growth) after cochlear implantation, a common issue that can negatively impact the long-term performance of cochlear implants. The research aims to validate biomarkers...
This federal Project Grant award of $249,000.00 from the National Institute on Deafness and Other Communication Disorders (NIDCD) under the Research Related to Deafness and Communication Disorders program (CFDA 93.173) supports research to investigate the role of macrophages in cisplatin-induced hearing loss. The primary objective is to identify the mechanisms by which macrophages regulate the blood-labyrinth barrier permeability in response to cisplatin, a widely used chemotherapeutic that can cause permanent hearing loss in up to 60% of cancer patients. Specifically, the research will examine the contribution of VEGF-A-FLT1 signaling to macrophage-mediated regulation of the blood-labyrinth barrier, as well as identify other soluble factors involved, using conditional knockout mice and tracer assays. This research aims to provide a better understanding of the biological pathways underlying cisplatin-induced ototoxicity, with the ultimate goal of developing more effective treatment strategies that do not compromise the antitumor efficacy of cisplatin. The project will be carried out by researchers at the University of Iowa over a 3-year period from Sep 1, 2025 to Aug 31, 2028.
