This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) federal grant program, will provide $221,375 to Oregon Health & Science University (OHSU) to investigate the role of the anterior olfactory system in regulating alcohol consumption. The key objectives are to examine whether chemogenetic activation of oxytocin receptor (OXTR)-containing neurons in the anterior olfactory nucleus (AON) and vasopressin...
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) awarded a $498,121.57 Project Grant under CFDA 93.273 - Alcohol Research Programs to the University of New Mexico (UNM) on Aug 15, 2024. The grant supports a research project titled "Corticolimbic Circuitry in Adaptive Stress Coping Behavior and Subsequent Alcohol Drinking." The project aims to investigate the neural mechanisms driving maladaptive coping responses to stress and subsequent alcohol use, with a focus on sex...
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) awarded a $537,587 Project Grant under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to The University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center to conduct research on the metabolic consequences of liver inflammation on alcohol consumption and alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD). The key objectives are to identify the mechanisms by which the transcription factor IRF3 suppresses the expression and secretion of the metabolic regulator...
This federal Project Grant award, totaling $517,248.00, was issued by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) grant program. The award supports research to explore the mechanisms by which acute and chronic alcohol exposure regulate a norepinephrine-astrocyte-dopamine arousal pathway in the ventral periaqueductal gray (VPAG) region of the brain, and how this pathway contributes to alcohol-related changes in sleep behavior....
The University of California Irvine was awarded a $412,125 Project Grant from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) federal grant program. The grant funds a research project to comprehensively determine how alcohol consumption alters the metabolism of critical organs, which can contribute to alcohol-induced organ damage. The project will employ arteriovenous metabolomics to quantitatively measure the dynamic metabolic...
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) awarded a $146,000 Project Grant under its Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to Louisiana State University Health Sciences Center-Shreveport. This 2-year grant will fund research to examine the impact of chronic alcohol use on acetylcholine signaling in the brain of rhesus macaques. The key objectives are to: 1) refine and validate techniques for measuring acetylcholine release in mouse brain slices, and then 2) use these...
This federal Project Grant award of $581,869 from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), under the CFDA 93.273 Alcohol Research Programs, will fund a human neuroscience study to investigate the role of glucocorticoid receptor (GR) antagonism in alcohol use disorder (AUD). The study will evaluate the effects of a selective GR antagonist, PT150, on behavioral, neuroendocrinological, and physiological responses to stress and alcohol in 34 participants. The research aims...
The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) awarded a $220,656 Project Grant under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) to the Board of Regents of the University of Nebraska, through its University of Nebraska Medical Center (UNMC) division. The grant will fund research to investigate the effects of ethanol metabolism on the sorting of non-isgylated HIV proteins to hepatocyte-derived exosomes, and how these exosomes impact the pro-fibrotic activation of hepatic stellate...
This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA), under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) federal grant program, will provide $701,135 to Yale University to characterize brain and peripheral cortisol dysregulation in individuals with alcohol use disorder (AUD). The project aims to fully describe the availability of the enzyme 11β-hydroxysteroid dehydrogenase type 1 (11β-HSD1), which regulates cortisol levels in the brain, and to...
This federal Project Grant award, valued at $523,477.00 and awarded by the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism (NIAAA) under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) on September 25, 2024, supports research to study alcohol-associated liver disease (ALD) and its interaction with the rs738409 variant in the PNPLA3 gene. The key products and services to be delivered under this grant include: Developing a human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC)-derived in vitro liver culture...
This Project Grant from the Department of Health and Human Services' National Institutes of Health National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism funded $160,462.52 to Oregon Health & Science University from June 1, 2021 through July 16, 2021 under the Alcohol Research Programs (CFDA 93.273) federal grant program.
The grant funding supported research to test the hypothesis that chronic alcohol use leads to aberrant steroid secretion and differential DNA methylation in the adrenal cortex of nonhuman primates. The studies proposed aim to identify epigenetic targets related to alcohol-induced allostasis in the stress response system. Results from the nonhuman primate model will be used to create an in vitro model to validate direct effects of alcohol on the adrenal cortex and enable future testing of intervention strategies. Insights gained regarding impacts of chronic alcohol and repeated abstinence on adrenal steroids could provide a valuable foundation for improved treatment and prevention efforts.
