Project Grant K76AG088558
- The University of Pittsburgh received a $801,268 Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) under the Aging Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.866). The objective of this 5-year award, with a start date of June 1, 2025, is to develop an effective evidence-based approach to providing value-based perioperative care in high-risk elderly surgical patients. The project aims to improve prediction and prevention of postoperative mortality, delirium, cognitive decline, and other...
- This $2,356,117 federal Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging's Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) will support research to improve the perioperative management of patients with Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. The primary objectives are to: (1) identify the extent to which surgical patients with these conditions are at increased risk for adverse postoperative outcomes, and (2) estimate the association between various perioperative interventions and the incidence...
- This federal Project Grant award, titled "BEFITME II: Applying User-Centered Co-Design and Implementation Science to Enhance Prehabilitation for Frail Older Adults Undergoing Lung Cancer Surgery", is funded by the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) in the amount of $243,000. The award, with an ultimate completion date of May 31, 2030, aims to develop and evaluate a wearable technology-based prehabilitation application that provides and tracks self-guided,...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) provides $161,500.00 to investigate the role of perineuronal nets (PNN) in the development of postoperative delirium in aged mice. The research aims to test the hypothesis that changes in PNN and parvalbumin-positive neurons coincide with delirium-like cognitive impairment in aged mice subjected to anesthesia, surgery, and intensive care unit (ICU)-like conditions. The project will also examine whether...
- This federal Project Grant award of $415,000 from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 Aging Research) supports research to improve surgical decision-making for older patients with primary hyperparathyroidism (PHPT). The key objectives are to: Develop predictive models for complications related to parathyroidectomy surgery in older adults, considering factors like age and frailty status. These models will be validated in a large national cohort. Evaluate the unique priorities and...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) totaling $956,214 will fund Ceresti Health, Inc. to develop and validate a Spanish-language version of their Caregiver-Enabled Care Program (CECP) for Hispanic/Latino families caring for loved ones with dementia. The CECP is a digital population health intervention that provides personalized education, coaching, and remote monitoring to unpaid/informal caregivers via a dedicated tablet. This project aims...
- This Project Grant award of $794,956 from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) Aging Research program (CFDA 93.866) aims to evaluate the effectiveness of Transitional Care Management (TCM) and Chronic Care Management (CCM) services in improving health outcomes and reducing healthcare costs for older adult Medicare beneficiaries. The research will employ a target trial emulation approach to compare TCM and CCM services to usual care, with a focus on outcomes such as home time, survival, and...
- This Project Grant award of $1,631,690.00 from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) to Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center, Inc. (Bidmc) supports a research project titled "Proteomic Signatures of Delirium and Long-Term Cognitive Decline in Older Cardiac Surgical Patients." The project aims to use state-of-the-art proteomics analysis to derive and validate a delirium protein signature for cardiac surgery patients, leveraging plasma samples from an ongoing...
- This federal Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 Aging Research) is for the research project "Impact of Hypertension and Aging on Postoperative Delirium". The $715,801 grant, awarded on June 1, 2025, supports Duke University's research to elucidate the contributions of endothelial cells and perivascular macrophages to surgery-induced neuroinflammation, blood-brain barrier disruption, and delirium-like behavior in aging and hypertension. The overarching...
- This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) provides $183,317 to The Regents of the University of California, San Francisco to conduct research focused on pain assessment, treatment, and functional outcomes in hospitalized, older adults. The key objectives of this clinically-grounded, patient-focused project are to: 1) Describe how pain is assessed and treated for older hospitalized adults through retrospective analysis of data from ~30,000...
This Project Grant award of $243,000.00 from the National Institute on Aging (CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research) aims to equip Dr. Canales with the necessary training and mentored research experience to emerge as a leader in perioperative aging research. The overarching goal is to conduct a pilot pragmatic randomized controlled trial of the Perioperative Care Partner Program (PCPP) in older adults undergoing major surgery. The PCPP combines established strategies for risk reduction and early diagnosis with improved communication and community engagement to diminish the risk of postoperative delirium within this vulnerable population. The award will enable Dr. Canales to become proficient in pragmatic clinical trials, gain skills in implementation science, and study communication and community engagement in the aging surgical population. This pilot study will refine the PCPP and evaluate its effectiveness in improving postoperative cognitive outcomes for limited English proficient older adults.
