The National Institute on Aging (NIA) awarded the University of Virginia (UVA) a $161,500 Project Grant under the Aging Research federal grant program (CFDA 93.866) to investigate the role of perineuronal nets (PNN) in the development of postoperative delirium. The 2-year project, commencing on July 15, 2024, aims to determine if changes in PNN composition and structure coincide with delirium-like cognitive impairment in aged mice subjected to anesthesia, surgery, and ICU-like conditions. If successful, this research could revolutionize the understanding of delirium's neurobiology and open new therapeutic approaches for this condition, which currently lacks effective pharmacological treatments.
