The National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD) awarded a $163,825 Project Grant on May 1, 2026, under the Child Health and Human Development Extramural Research program (CFDA 93.865) to support a prospective longitudinal clinical investigation of physical activity and bone health among female adolescents recovering from restrictive eating disorders. Under the direction of Dr. Aubrey Armento at the University of Colorado-Denver, this research will be conducted through the Children's Hospital Colorado Eating Disorder Program (CHCO-EDP) and will extend through November 30, 2029. The study will track female adolescents admitted to the eating disorder treatment program over one year of active treatment and recovery, compared against a healthy, physically active control group. The primary products and services delivered through this award include: (1) prospective longitudinal clinical data collection on physical activity participation measured via wearable activity monitors and its association with compulsive exercise and eating disorder behaviors; and (2) biomedical measurements of changes in bone mineral density and bone microarchitecture using high-resolution peripheral quantitative computed tomography (HR-pQCT) imaging to assess estimated bone strength. These research activities are designed to address critical knowledge gaps regarding the safe integration of physical activity during eating disorder recovery and the optimization of bone health outcomes in adolescent females during this critical period of peak bone accrual.Federal Grant Award Summary
