This Project Grant award from the National Institute on Aging (NIA) under CFDA 93.866 - Aging Research will support Charles Windon, MD, a behavioral neurologist and assistant professor at the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) Memory and Aging Center, in becoming an independent clinical researcher focused on biomarker-informed inequities in Alzheimer's disease and related dementias (AD/ADRD). The $164,117 award, effective August 1, 2025 through April 30, 2030, will allow Dr. Windon to pursue training goals in PET imaging analysis, plasma biomarker analysis, advanced statistical methodology, and analytic approaches to individual- and neighborhood-level social determinants of health (SDOH). The research aims to investigate how global B-amyloid burden, phosphorylated tau (p-tau) 217, and neurofilament light (NFL) biomarkers are associated with AD/ADRD among diverse populations with varying SDOH profiles. The findings will inform future R01 research to develop and explore models validated in larger cohorts to identify key pathological contributions to cognitive impairment for ethnoculturally diverse individuals.
