About this award
The Department of the Interior Fish and Wildlife Service Region 1 awarded a $162,876 Project Grant to the Washington State Department of Fish & Wildlife (WDFW) under the Endangered Species Recovery Implementation Program (CFDA 15.657). The funding will support continued efforts to rescue and monitor bull trout populations in streams that are slated for habitat restoration in 2023 and 2025. The goal is to determine the efficacy of the planned habitat improvements in reducing bull trout mortality from stream dewatering. Additionally, the grant will help answer critical data gaps by verifying bull trout presence in streams targeted for reintroduction and determining if a newly discovered population in the Little Naches River represents a new population or expanded distribution. This work is expected to ultimately eliminate the need for bull trout rescue efforts once the habitat restoration projects are complete. The award period is from January 1, 2024 to January 1, 2026.
Description
Determine the efficacy of habitat improvements to reduce bull trout mortality in dewatering streams by continuing to conduct demographic surveys and collect habitat data. Ultimately, these upcoming habitat restoration projects are expected to eliminate the need for rescue. Additionally, we need to answer critical data gaps by verifying 1) bull trout presence or functional extirpation in streams targeted for upcoming reintroduction and 2) determine if a new discovery of significant bull trout presence (via edna) in the headwaters of the little naches river is a new population or expanded distribution of an existing population.
