The University of Kentucky Research Foundation received a $270,496 two-year Project Grant award from the United States Department of Agriculture Agricultural Marketing Service under the Regional Food System Partnerships (RFSP) program. The Growing Healthy Appalachia Partnership (GHAP) will cultivate regional food economies in Central Appalachia through public-private partnerships combining institutional food procurement, cooperative economic models, culinary skills training, and agricultural value chain coordination to benefit small and mid-sized farms. As the prime awardee, UKRF will partner with Community Farm Alliance and leverage their respective expertise in healthcare, agriculture, and research to plan and pilot test direct-to-consumer and institutional food procurement models increasing access to locally-grown foods for residents and employees in Kentucky's Appalachian Region Healthcare system and beyond. Community Farm Alliance will receive a subaward to recruit producers, convene partners, facilitate pilots of on-site markets and farm-to-institution programs at healthcare facilities, and contribute to project reporting.
