The University of Hawaii (UH) was awarded a $299,943 Project Grant from the National Science Foundation's (NSF) Integrative Activities Program (CFDA 47.083) to enhance flood detection and mapping capabilities. The project aims to develop state-of-the-art computational tools using polarimetric synthetic aperture radar (PolSAR) data, metaheuristic algorithms, and deep learning techniques to rapidly and accurately map flooded areas. This research will help improve disaster response, water resource management, and risk mitigation efforts, particularly for underrepresented coastal communities. The award, effective from January 1, 2024 to December 31, 2025, also includes educational activities to engage underserved high school and undergraduate students in STEM fields related to hydrology, remote sensing, and natural hazards.
