The National Science Foundation (NSF) awarded a Project Grant under the Integrative Activities (CFDA 47.083) program to the University of Hawaii at Manoa (UH) for $299,920 from February 1, 2025 to January 31, 2027. The purpose of this award is to develop a state-of-the-art modeling framework to improve predictions of saltwater intrusion in coastal volcanic aquifers in Hawaii. The project will integrate conduit flow processes and 3D connected heterogeneity to better understand and mitigate the impacts of saltwater intrusion, sea level rise, and groundwater withdrawal on coastal freshwater resources. The work will be conducted in collaboration with researchers at Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and will provide a fellowship for an assistant professor and training for a graduate student at UH. The enhanced modeling capabilities and knowledge gained from this project are expected to inform the development of targeted strategies to safeguard the long-term sustainability of Hawaii's coastal water supplies.
