The project, funded under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310), addresses labor-intensive manual welfare assessments by...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $500,000 to University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. on December 15, 2025, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to operate a four-year Agriculture and Life Sciences Summer Institute. The institute will train 36 middle and high school educators through summer professional learning, field experiences, and mentorship in student-centered, active learning practices. An additional 18...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. $650,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on February 1, 2026. The recipient will use a custom-built transportation simulator to test the effects of commercial trailer vibrations on pig muscle cell activation, oxidative capacity, muscle metabolism, and fatigue onset. Prior research measured commercial trailer vibration patterns sufficient...
- The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Georgia Research Foundation $749,038 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) on December 1, 2025, to assess trade-offs between growth and stress resilience in economically and ecologically important pine species. The recipient will investigate whole-tree productivity and functional trait responses to multiple stressors—drought, brown spot needle blight, and fire—across...
- The Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $617,000 to the University of Georgia Research Foundation on April 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) to identify genetic regions and markers controlling blueberry flowering time and fruiting period through pangenome graph-based genotyping and phenomics approaches. The project addresses spring freeze damage and summer heat stress threatening U.S. blueberry production by developing...
- The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. was awarded a $650,000 Project Grant from the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program. The grant funds a 3-year project to develop "Transformative Platforms to Prevent and Control Highly Pathogenic Avian Influenza." The project aims to advance scientific knowledge and technological innovations to improve agricultural...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of California, Davis $180,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) on May 1, 2026, to support research in poultry genetics and genomics focused on selective breeding of broilers capable of thriving in diverse environmental conditions to enhance global food security through sustainable protein production. The project includes a comprehensive training and mentoring plan...
- Federal Grant Award Summary The University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. received a $490,000 project grant awarded on August 1, 2025, by the National Institute of Food and Agriculture (NIFA) under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310). The four-year project, scheduled for completion on July 31, 2029, focuses on developing insect pest resistance in commercial peanut cultivars to address significant profit losses experienced by southeastern peanut growers...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $750,000 to the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. on April 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to develop and deliver hands-on educational experiences for high school students in Georgia and North Carolina through 4-H and FFA programs. The project addresses the gap between rapid advancement in food technologies—including biotechnology, nanotechnology, and food...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $650,000 to the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program to develop multi-trait threshold-linear statistical models for analyzing categorical and linear traits jointly in livestock genetic evaluations. The project will develop theoretically sound and computationally efficient frameworks for large-scale genetic and genomic evaluation of multiple categorical fitness traits—including health, fertility, disease, and welfare indicators—under BLUP and single-step genomic BLUP (SSGBLUP) methods. The work will extend this theory to compute and approximate the accuracy of genomic breeding values in threshold-linear models and apply the framework to genome-wide association studies (GWAS) for multiple categorical traits. Current mixed-model approaches can accommodate only one categorical trait, limiting the industry's ability to conduct accurate genetic gain predictions across the complex, multi-categorical data now collected by breeding companies and associations. The deliverables will provide practical tools for U.S. livestock industry use in estimating breeding values, accuracies, and performing GWAS on large genomic datasets containing multiple categorical traits. Performance occurs at Athens, Georgia. The period of performance extends from September 15, 2026 through September 14, 2030. This is a Project Grant, assistance type.
