The project will develop theoretically sound and computationally efficient frameworks for large-scale genetic and genomic...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $299,440 to the University of Missouri System on May 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to conduct research on reproductive and genomic technologies for beef cattle breeding systems. The award supports research aimed at increasing adoption of genomic testing and artificial insemination—particularly sex-sorted semen—within commercial beef operations to enable precision...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded the University of Illinois $650,000 under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) on September 15, 2026, to validate digital phenotyping technologies for genomic selection in beef cattle. The research will establish the first large-scale validation comparing digital traits captured through imaging technology against conventional phenotypic records such as manual weighing and visual...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Cornell University $650,000 on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), CFDA 10.310, to develop renewable stem cell methods for preserving cattle genetics. The project investigates generating renewable stem cells from blood samples to preserve valuable cattle genetics as an alternative to finite frozen semen and embryo repositories. Research activities include developing and...
- The National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Texas A&M Agrilife Research $650,000 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) Foundational and Applied Science Program to investigate the genetic contributions of male and female parents to pregnancy establishment and maintenance in cattle, with particular focus on embryonic mortality during days 28–60 of gestation. The research addresses late-stage embryonic loss, which occurs in approximately 12...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Washington State University $300,000 on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to conduct research on parent-specific epigenetic modifications in the bovine placenta and their role in pregnancy establishment and maintenance in dairy cattle. The project addresses pregnancy loss in dairy heifers, a leading cause of premature exit from production systems with industry...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $650,000 to Virginia Polytechnic Institute & State University on February 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to investigate interleukin-6 family signaling proteins and their roles in early embryonic development and pregnancy establishment in cattle. The research has three specific aims: determine how IL6-family signals guide early embryo formation, particularly the...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Colorado State University $180,000 on May 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI, CFDA 10.310) to evaluate bovine embryo quality using genetic and epigenetic analysis prior to transfer. The research will examine whether embryos of varying quality display distinct methylation patterns and whether invasive biopsy methods alter these patterns, with the goal of improving embryo selection to...
- Federal Grant Award Summary Texas A&M Agrilife Research received an $800,000 Project Grant from the USDA's Institute of Food Production and Sustainability under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310), effective September 1, 2025, through August 31, 2028. The award funds research to address functional annotation of animal genomes (FAANG) by characterizing enhancer elements—regulatory DNA sequences that control gene expression—across multiple bovine...
- The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded Cornell University $300,000 on March 1, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), Assistance Listing 10.310, to investigate the molecular mechanisms driving early embryonic gene activation in cattle. Cornell will map the timing and location of histone acetylation (H4K16ac) on DNA-packaging proteins during the first days after fertilization, and determine the developmental consequences when the...
The Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture awarded $300,000 to the University of Georgia Research Foundation, Inc. on September 15, 2026, under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) program (CFDA 10.310) to develop and test statistical methods for evaluating beef bulls used in beef-on-dairy breeding programs. The project will apply two novel statistical approaches—metafounders and ancestry-weighted genomic relationships—to cattle genomic data to improve genetic evaluation of beef bulls crossed onto dairy cows. Because beef and dairy cattle have historically been recorded separately, maternal pedigree records are incomplete, limiting the accuracy of standard genetic evaluation methods. The team will test both methods against real and simulated cattle datasets, compare their performance, and identify which approach most accurately ranks beef bulls for use on dairy cows. The expected deliverable is a validated method for genetic ranking that accounts for missing maternal connections, enabling breeders to select superior beef bulls and improve the quality and profitability of beef-on-dairy calf production. Work is performed at Athens, Georgia. The period of performance runs from September 15, 2026, through September 14, 2028.
