The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) awarded a $300,000 Food Safety Outreach Program grant to the Cal Poly Pomona Foundation Inc. to develop and implement food safety training, education, extension, outreach, and technical assistance projects targeting small to mid-sized farms, beginning farmers, socially disadvantaged farmers, small processors, and small fresh fruit and vegetable merchant wholesalers in Southern California. The project aims to increase understanding and adoption of established food safety standards, guidance, and protocols through customized educational resources, training programs, and direct technical assistance delivered by Cal Poly Pomona students serving as food safety ambassadors. The 2-year grant (Sep 2024 - Aug 2026) will fund the creation of a new food safety curriculum, workshops for local food processors and urban/community farmers, and student-led extension services tailored to stakeholder needs, establishing a sustainable model of collaboration between the university, students, and the regional food production community.
