The U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) awarded a $494,919 Project Grant through the Food Safety Outreach Program (CFDA 10.328) to the Louisiana State University Agricultural Center. The grant, awarded on September 1, 2024, aims to provide interactive on-farm food safety training to farm workers and underserved farmers in Louisiana and Florida. Key components include developing educational materials covering good agricultural practices (GAPs), good handling practices (GHPs), worker health/hygiene, and FDA Food Safety Modernization Act (FSMA) requirements. The program will also offer risk assessment tools, standard operating procedures, and other resources to help growers strengthen their food safety practices. Two minority-serving institutions, Southern University Agricultural Research and Extension Center and Florida A&M University, will serve as sub-awardees to assist with developing training content and delivering hands-on safety education in English and Spanish to target populations.
