The U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA) awarded a $750,000 Project Grant under the 1890 Institution Capacity Building Grants program (CFDA 10.216) to Florida A&M University (FAMU). This 3-year grant, awarded on May 1, 2024, supports the project "Building AI/ML Capacity for Digital Agriculture and Plant Phenotyping Technologies Research, Education, and Extension at FAMU." The key objectives of this project are to: 1) Adapt cutting-edge plant phenotyping technology for use in muscadine vineyards to expedite disease identification, 2) Establish a digital agriculture IoT pilot integrating advanced irrigation scheduling and disease sensing in muscadine vineyards, 3) Enhance curriculum and experiential learning for minority African American students in AI/ML applications for precision agriculture, and 4) Promote AI/ML technologies among underserved farmers through extension programs. FAMU is collaborating with Purdue University and the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL) to deliver these objectives. UNL is receiving a $150,000 sub-award to help establish the digital agriculture IoT pilot, and Purdue is receiving a $200,000 sub-award to contribute expertise on plant phenotyping technology and AI/ML models.
