This $760,000 Project Grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture's National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (CFDA 10.310) program. The overall goal is to grow precision engineering systems and technologies for near real-time monitoring of muscadine grape vineyards and water management. The project will pilot the FAMU Center for Viticulture and Small Fruit Research as a testbed to deploy these advanced engineering technologies, enabling stakeholders, especially underserved African American growers, to observe, learn, and test continuous improvement processes for vineyard sustainability, such as canopy health, water use efficiency, disease sensing, and environmental impact. The project will also engage minority African American students in experiential learning to train them for precision viticulture and water management. As a sub-award, the University of Nebraska-Lincoln will provide research support services for the precision agriculture platforms and training activities.
