** AWARDS ISSUED PRIOR TO JANUARY 20, 2025, WERE FUNDED UNDER PREVIOUS ADMINISTRATIONS AND MAY NOT REFLECT THE PRIORITIES AND POLICIES OF THE CURRENT ADMINISTRATION.** SMALL FLOCK PRODUCERS LACK INFORMATION ON POULTRY DRINKING WATER SUPPLIES BEST MANAGEMENT PRACTICES AND OFTEN THE POULTRY DRINKING WATER QUALITY IS OVERLOOKED. MOST FARMS USE UNDERGROUND WATER SOURCES FOR POULTRY DRINKING PURPOSES. UNDERGROUND WATER SUPPLIES ARE VULNERABLE TO CONTAMINATION PARTICULARLY IN THE KARST TERRAIN AS CAN BE FOUND IN TENNESSEE (TN). THE GOAL OF THE PROPOSED PROJECT IS TO DEVELOP FINDINGS-BASED EXTENSION RESOURCES ON SMALL FLOCK POULTRY DRINKING WATER QUALITY MANAGEMENT. FARM WATER SUPPLIES THAT USE UNDERGROUND WATER SOURCES FOR POULTRY DRINKING PURPOSES WILL BE PROFILED FOR MICROBIAL AND MINERAL CHANGES TO UNDERSTAND WATER QUALITY ISSUES. PROBLEM FARMS WILL BE IDENTIFIED, AND FARM-SPECIFIC WATER TREATMENT STRATEGIES WILL BE SOUGHT. THE EFFICACY OF EXISTING AND NOVEL (ENVIRONMENT FRIENDLY) WATER SANITIZER PRODUCTS FOR POULTRY WATER SUPPLIES SANITATION WILL BE EVALUATED AGAINST NON-SPECIFIC AND SPECIFIC MICROBES FOR VARIOUS WATER QUALITY TYPES. FURTHERMORE, THE EFFECTS OF CHRONIC EXPOSURE OF HIGHER LEVELS OF SPECIFIC WATER QUALITY PARAMETERS ON BIRD HEALTH AND PERFORMANCE WILL BE STUDIED BY CONDUCTING BIRD TRIALS. THE RESEARCH RESULTS WILL BE DISSEMINATED TO POULTRY PRODUCERS AND COUNTY AGENTS IN TN BY TWO STATE-WIDE POULTRY EXTENSION SPECIALISTS (DRS.-MAHARJAN AND TABLER) THROUGH CONDUCTING HANDS-ON WORKSHOPS AND EDUCATIONAL MATERIALS. THESE OUTREACH ACTIVITIES WILL HELP SMALL-SCALE PRODUCERS TO TAKE INFORMED DECISIONS TOWARDS IMPLEMENTING FARM-SPECIFIC WATER SANITATION STRATEGIES FOR IMPROVEMENT OF FLOCK HEALTH (PRE-HARVEST FOOD SAFETY) AND PRODUCTIVITY (FOOD SECURITY). THE OUTCOMES OF THE PROJECT WILL GREATLY IMPACT PRODUCERS IN TN TOWARDS BUILDING AND THRIVING POULTRY OPERATION VIA IMPROVEMENT IN POULTRY DRINKING WATER MANAGEMENT PRACTICES.
