This $300,000 project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture will fund research at Prairie View A&M University to study the relationship between bacterial infection, inflammatory response, and proteolysis of casein in milk. Specifically, the university researchers will measure immune cell profiles and expression of inflammatory cytokines in milk leukocytes using flow cytometry and ELISA techniques. They will also conduct an intramammary infusion study using a novel micronized lactoferrin-sulfonlyl-methane complex to help eliminate and prevent new infections of Escherichia coli, Staphylococcus aureus, Streptococcus uberis, and Streptococcus agalactiae, which can cause subclinical mastitis. The overarching goal is to enhance milk quantity and quality by reducing intramammary infections and problematic lesions, which may decrease antibiotic use in milk production systems. This work supports the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative competitive grants program administered by USDA NIFA under the CFDA number 10.310 to fund fundamental and applied research addressing food and agricultural sciences.
