The Oregon State University was awarded a $642,301 Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) federal grant program (CFDA #10.310). The grant will support the development of an integrated computational and molecular workflow for rapidly designing CRISPR-based diagnostic tools for plant diseases. Specific objectives include expanding an existing Python algorithm to design CRISPR diagnostics for major platforms using whole genome sequences, demonstrating proof-of-concept using two economically important pathogen groups with extensive genomic resources, and developing web-based resources and protocols as well as presenting at workshops. The grant aims to provide novel means of detecting and diagnosing transboundary, emerging, re-emerging, or invasive plant diseases in alignment with AFRI program priorities. Work will be performed in Corvallis, Oregon over a four-year period ending May 31, 2027.
