This $650,000 Project Grant, awarded by the U.S. Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA-NIFA) under the Biotechnology Risk Assessment Research (BRAG) Program (CFDA 10.219), supports the development of tools and frameworks to assist in the threat assessment of genetically engineered microorganisms (GEMs) for agricultural applications. The key objectives of the "STRATAGEM" project are to develop a standardized suite of DNA watermarking and laboratory testing methods to enable the fingerprinting, behavior prediction, and traceability of new GEM products. This will support comprehensive ecological risk assessments and regulatory monitoring of large-scale GEM deployments in agricultural settings. The 4-year project is being conducted by the University of Colorado to address the need for predictable, controllable, and monitorable GEM-based interventions that can replace more expensive chemical or physical processes for sustainable nutrient, carbon, pesticide, and waste management.
