This $10 million project grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture (USDA NIFA) supports research under the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI) competitive grants program (CFDA #10.310). Oregon State University will lead efforts to establish a globally competitive hemp-based supply chain across Pacific states by improving hemp genetics, identifying suitable production regions, assessing infrastructure needs, and implementing workforce training. Sub-awards to the Agricultural Research Service, Washington State University, University of Nevada Reno, University of California Davis, and 7 Generations LLC will support complementary objectives to sustainably incorporate hemp as a bio-economy feedstock in rural and tribal lands. The five-year grant period beginning September 2021 aims to provide science-based information to farmers, tribes, economic developers, financiers, policymakers, and regulators evaluating the technical, economic, environmental, and social aspects of a regional hemp economy.
