The Colorado State University will receive $299,451 under a three-year Project Grant from the United States Department of Agriculture National Institute of Food and Agriculture to address challenges in hemp disease management. The goal is to develop diagnostic tools and identify mitigation strategies for pathogens affecting the hemp industry as production increases across the United States. Key deliverables include characterizing the diversity and distribution of viruses and viroids in hemp using high-throughput sequencing, identifying insect vectors, determining host resistance in elite hemp germplasm, and creating outreach materials for growers, industry members and other stakeholders. Findings will be disseminated through the Hemp Disease website at Colorado State University, as well as presentations, extension publications and scientific papers. This award from the Agriculture and Food Research Initiative (AFRI), which provides competitive funding for food and agricultural sciences research, directly addresses program priorities around plant health and production.
