About the company
Bioversys AG is a privately owned Swiss pharmaceutical company focusing on research and development of small molecules acting on novel bacterial targets to address the high unmet medical need for new treatments against life-threatening resistant bacterial infections.
Through a federal contract sub-award from the prime contractor Trustees of Boston University, Bioversys AG has been involved in the development of BV300, a new antibacterial class called pyrrolocytosines with potent activity against both Gram-positive and Gram-negative pathogens, including multidrug-resistant (MDR) and extensively drug-resistant (XDR) pathogens. The pyrrolocytosines inhibit bacterial protein synthesis by binding to and inhibiting the function of the bacterial ribosome. Bioversys AG acquired the pyrrolocytosine program from Melinta Therapeutics in April 2019 and is currently undertaking lead optimization with the aim of generating a candidate pyrrolocytosine ready to enter Investigational New Drug (IND) enabling studies in 2022.
Through federal grant sub-awards from the prime grantee Trustees of Boston University, Bioversys AG has been involved in two projects. The first project, titled "AVATAR-SA: Anti-Virulence Agent for Therapy Against Resistant Staphylococcus Aureus," focuses on developing inhibitors of a validated transcriptional regulator of virulence in Staphylococcus aureus, including community-acquired and hospital-acquired strains such as MRSA. These inhibitors have been shown to block a range of virulence factors, including toxins implicated in skin and skin structure infections (SSSIs), acute bacterial skin and skin structure infections (ABSSIs), and pneumonia. The second project involves optimizing and developing this first-in-class anti-virulence agent, resulting in an oral clinical candidate for treatment of severe S. aureus-mediated hospital infections, as well as for stand-alone use in the community for early treatment of uncomplicated SSSIs, fostering judicious antibiotic use and stewardship.
