About this program

The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) funds academic medical centers to implement and evaluate innovative telehealth solutions serving rural and underserved communities through the Telehealth Centers of Excellence program (CFDA 93.467), with a recent opportunity posted July 22, 2026.

The program supports academic medical centers in integrating telehealth technologies into chronic disease prevention, management, and acute-episode treatment, with centers expected to disseminate research findings and serve as national models for replicable approaches that expand access to care and improve health outcomes in medically underserved areas. A companion solicitation for the Chronic Care Telehealth Centers of Excellence Program (HRSA-27-055) was posted July 22, 2026 and focuses specifically on chronic care integration using innovative telehealth technologies. A prior opportunity (HRSA-26-056) had a due date of July 8, 2026.

Funding is delivered as Cooperative Agreements. Eligible applicants are academic medical centers located in public higher education institutions and, under the most recent solicitation, private higher education institutions as well. The program operates under limited competition restricted to incumbent Telehealth Centers of Excellence award recipients operating successful telehealth programs in public academic medical centers situated in states with high chronic disease prevalence, high poverty rates, and large percentages of medically underserved rural areas.

The funding agency conducts an independent review of all applications through HRSA's Division of Independent Review, with written notification provided via Notice of Award. The program indicates a two-month review timeline. Renewal status has not been determined. Grant accounting records must be maintained for three years after Federal Financial Review submission, with extended retention required if litigation, claims, or audits remain outstanding. Entities expending one million dollars or more in federal awards annually are subject to single or program-specific audit under 2 CFR 200, Subpart F.
