About this program
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) within the Department of Health and Human Services funds state and local oral health promotion and disease prevention programs under Assistance Listing 93.366, with the most recent grant opportunity (CDC-RFA-DP-24-0048) posting on August 1, 2023 and closing May 28, 2024.
This program funds concrete oral disease prevention activities including school dental sealant programs, community water fluoridation initiatives, oral health surveillance using secondary data sources, infection prevention and control guideline adherence in dental settings, and medical-dental integration focused on adults with Type 2 diabetes. The program requires recipients to have the capacity to work across state and community levels.
Grant activity in the source portfolio spans to 2018; the two most recent awards were both obligated on September 1, 2018, totaling $9 million in federal dollars obligated. The Virginia Department of Health received a Cooperative Agreement (NU58DP006481) for $5.7 million to expand school sealant programs in underserved areas and maintain community water fluoridation education and support. The Maryland Department of Health received a Cooperative Agreement (NU58DP006475) for $3.33 million to implement evidence-based preventive dental services including school sealant and fluoridation programs and to develop oral health surveillance capacity. Both awards had ultimate completion dates of August 31, 2024.
The assistance-type mix consists entirely of Cooperative Agreements. The CDC is the sole funding agency under this program. Award periods of performance run 1 to 5 years with 12-month budget periods; after initial awards, projects may be continued non-competitively contingent upon satisfactory progress and determination that continued funding serves the federal government's interest.
The most recently posted opportunity, CDC-RFA-DP-24-0048, is a three-year competitive announcement soliciting Cooperative Agreements from state governments, tribes, nonprofits, local governments, and other eligible applicants. A modification to the NOFO clarified applicant requirements around statewide and community-level capacity, refined the medical-dental integration focus to Type 2 diabetes populations, and removed the requirement for a full-time Sealant Coordinator in favor of a full-time EBPDS coordinator. The prior award cycle (CDC-RFA-DP18-1810) closed May 4, 2018, supporting five-year projects implemented through 2023.
